About the Author

After earning a Ph.D. in Islamic history, Mark A. Gabriel became convinced that Muhammad did not speak for God. His search for truth led to the love of Jesus Christ, as well as complete rejection from his family and two attempts against his life by political fundamentalists. Now pursuing a Ph.D. in world religion at a Christian university, he speaks and writes about the true nature of Islam with the non-emotional accuracy of an academician. As a reflection of his new life in Christ, he has chosen a Christian name to replace his Islamic name.

The pen is mightier than the sword

I'm so grateful to my Dad who introduced me to this book. Knowledge is vital to healthy debate and discussion and I have been given an absolute gem of clear, concise and honestly unbiased facts with which to greater understand both Islam and Christianity. There are far too many ignorant conversations happening on the subject of religion in the west. Our opinions must only be formed after immersing ourselves in true understanding and this book is a fabulous start. I am so grateful to Dr Gabriel for his life and his work and for risking so much to be able to write this book.

Very good well written by someone familiar with both of these religious leaders...

I wanted to find out more about the leader of the 2nd largest religion in the world. I could not obtain any facts about him doing a Google search, just rhetoric. I wanted to find out more about him from someone who really had researched him and was going to tell the truth. I found this book and this man's story very enlightening. I am a Christian and I have many friends and co-workers who are Muslim. So please take that in consideration but, I am glad I read the book and encourage others who want to understand the differences between these two religious leaders than this book if for you and will educate you on the differences between.

Incredible

Thankfully, I've just completed reading this book and am grateful for the time, care and dedication Dr. Gabriel has taken in writing it. His sincerity in wanting readers to know the truth and be set free could not be said or understood clearer. It is an invaluable resource and one I believe every true believer and follower of Christ should have. I do however wish to warn my fellow believers that such pertinent information is not to be used as a weapon against our Muslim brothers and sisters but to gain an understanding and appreciation of their beliefs, so that we can be better ministers of the Word and witnesses of the true and living God. I truly empathise with this group and truly grieve and yearn for their souls to be truly saved.

I've always been open to and interested in others' beliefs, and once thought that everyone's beliefs/religion and gods were right. When I met the God of Grace and the God of Glory, Jesus Christ, I understood that everyone's truth was not The Truth. It wasn't simply "there are many truths" as my Graduate lecturers would have me believe. There can truly only be One Truth.

I am now even more eager than before to obtain a personal copy of the Q'oran myself to see first hand the references made in Dr. Gabriel's book. I love to learn and I love to love and would therefore recommend this book a hundred times over.

Thank you Jesus, and thank you Dr. Gabriel for your sincere and beautiful contribution to the cause of Truth and nothing but.

About the Author
Ronald L. Grimes is co-editor of the Oxford Ritual Studies Series and the author of several books on ritual, most recently The Craft of Ritual Studies. Grimes resides in Waterloo, Ontario, where he is Director of Ritual Studies International and Professor Emeritus of Religion and Culture at Wilfrid Laurier University. Recently, he has held the following positions: Visiting Professor of Religious Studies at Charles University, Prague in the Czech Republic; Senior Researcher and Senior Lecturer at Yale University; Chair of Ritual Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

Best Embodying The Noncommittal Nature Of Ritual Studies

"I'm hoping to provoke you into doing your own reimagining of ritual, its theories, and the methods for studying it - even if you do so against what I have written here." With these words, Ronald Grimes concludes the main body of his new book, The Craft Of Ritual Studies. It's a generous spirit with which to write a guide for students of ritual, and one that reflects the noncommittal approach that has come to typify the study of ritual.

It's ironic that the academic tradition of ritual studies has become so reluctant to adopt any particular stance about how ritual works, or even what ritual is. Ritual, after all, is a practice that requires some form commitment - at least enough to translate abstract ideas into concrete action, and often a great deal more than that. Over the last few decades, ritual studies has wandered away from clear, inspiring metaphors into a misty territory of abstractions that often reads more like philosophy than a description of a form of human behavior.

Such an approach is appropriate for academics, who specialize in sustaining intellectual debate. It hasn't produced much of use for those who would seek to apply the dynamics of ritual, rather than merely discussing ideas of ritual. To actually work in ritual requires more firm ground than ritual studies can offer.

It's important, in reading this book, to remember that it is written for an academic audience - for students and professors whose goal is to publish papers, and perhaps books, with which to earn academic advancement. It is not written for consultants or managers who seek to learn about ritual so that they can craft more fruitful experiences. Those who would apply ritual dynamics are currently without a guide, and the Craft of Ritual Studies does not bridge the gap between academic study and practice.

However, of all the books that have been written by specialists in ritual studies, The Craft Of Ritual Studies goes the furthest in providing concrete ideas about how to organize research of rituals. Unlike other books about ritual studies, which focus on ritual theory and on research findings, The Craft Of Ritual Studies explores the methods of research. So, while Ronald Grimes refuses to commit to any particular model of ritual, he at least provides those of us who seek to apply ritual dynamics with a set of tools for researching ritual activities, and for critically considering the models we adopt, not as final truths, but as solid methods for practice.

The Craft of Ritual Studies is at its strongest in the lists that Grimes provides, which show the comprehensive scope of Grimes' consideration of ritual - a benefit of his decades of experience in the area. This book should be read by anyone who seeks to study ritual, either as an academic or in the application of ritual dynamics - not because Grimes always makes the most useful judgments about how ritual works, but because he has identified the most useful questions that students of ritual can ask.

Joey Yap is the founder of the Mastery Academy of Chinese Metaphysics, a global organisation devoted to the teaching of Feng Shui, BaZi, Qi Men Dun Jia, Mian Xiang and other Chinese Metaphysics subjects. About the Author
Poet Suheir Hammad was born in Amman, Jordan, to refugee Palestinian parents. She immigrated with her family to Brooklyn, New York, when she was just five years old. Inspired by poet-performers such as Nikki Giovanni, Hammad has traveled the world reciting her poetry in various venues and universities. Her writings have appeared in over a dozen anthologies. Her books include BREAKING POEMS, ZAATARDIVA, and BORN PALESTINIAN, BORN BLACK. She has written for and performed in the Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam on Broadway and appears in the Cannes Film Festival Official Selection Salt of This Sea.

Palestinian-American poet Suheir Hammad is in a class of her own. The first Palestinian on Broadway, she received a Tony Award for her performance in "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam," and won a Peabody Award for the HBO series of the same name. She stars as Soraya in Annemarie Jacir's film "Salt of This Sea," Palestine's entry in this year's Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film category. Hammad is also an accomplished playwright, as evidenced by "Blood Trinity" (2002) and "ReOrientalism" (2003). Used copies of her debut collection of poems, Born Palestinian, Born Black, when available, sell for hundreds of dollars. breaking poems, her fourth collection, demonstrates Hammad's maturation as a poet and captures the Zeitgeist of this moment in the Palestinians' 60-plus-year Nakba at the hands of Zionism--a relentless attempt to eradicate an entire people which continues to this day.

On a technical level, breaking poems represents new heights in Hammad's sparse style. As the title suggests, the poems in this collection read like messages from the front lines--heavy, measured, parsed, rationed--boiled down to essential information and elemental emotion forged by the raging fury of a battle for survival. The style suits Hammad because it accomplishes what many spoken-word poets fail to achieve: a seamless transition from the energy and cadence of live performance to the printed page. Her words, carefully considered and organized, transcend two-dimensional black and white print to encompass voice, beat, image and visceral emotion.

While her previous collections read like galleries of poetic masterpieces, breaking poems is perhaps Hammad's first conceptualized poetic narrative. Her character in this novella is a witness to unfolding physical and psychological terror. Like the assassinated Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali's iconic Handala, Hammad's character in breaking poems is both a victim and a witness to this terror. And, like Handala, her character is the personification of sumoud (steadfastness), clinging to tatters of humanity in a purgatory between hope and disillusion. She engages the scene, but also hovers above it, challenging the contradictions of appearance and reality. Exploring the relationship between mind, body, and soul, she deftly portrays the out-of-body experience of living through war.

Hammad also takes significant innovative risk through the infusion of transliterated Arabic into already densely referenced work. For those who understand the references and are familiar with the vocabulary, Hammad gives voice to unspoken words, feelings, and identities, embodying an Arab world on life support. Her words--at times almost unbearably heavy, intolerably familiar, unspeakably truthful--are glittering shards of a shattered world. As her character descends into madness, lucid verse is distilled to clouds of words the reader is left to decipher.

Skillfully illuminating the emotional and psychological consequences of this historic nadir of the Palestinian national movement, breaking poems is an intimate and gut-wrenching S.O.S. that seeks to heal through description--and awake numb survivors to fight anew.

The poetry of Suheir Hammad is both classical and new. Brilliant and passionate. Immediate and timeless. She is among the greatest living poets. This book is a departure for her, the work is more formal, but it stands as one of her best. I recommend it highly, for anyone that loves poetry, for anyone who thinks, for anyone who feels.
