Kevin Ruck is founding director of PR Academy, the largest CIPR qualifications centre providing education, training and coaching for communication professionals. Perhaps you are already investing in real estate and want to pick up a few more ideas to help you fine tune your skills, or maybe you are beginner and want to learn exactly how to get started investing. Whether you are a seasoned investor or a fresh beginner, this book will help you make more money investing in real estate without the hassles associated with traditional real estate investing, such as tenants, banks, or rehab projects.

How can we make such an outrageous claim—and even put it on the cover? Is our claim just hype to trick you into buying the book? No, it isn’t. Over the past six years, we’ve been fine tuning our Purchase Option System so that we now do almost all of our deals without ordinary renters, without risky bank financing, and without involved rehab projects. Rather than putting a renter into your investment property, you will learn how to sell your properties on a rent-to-own basis to a tenant-buyer. I have lots of books written by Peter Conti and love them all. These books have helped me to gain a crisp knowledge of real investing terms and strategies. I have marked up my books with lots and lots of stickies and notes because the information has helped me to get through some of the deals that I have encountered. This is definitely a resource that you should use if you are new to real estate investing the information that you get in this book is invaluable.

This book is great

I read this book, as well as the earlier Peter Conti/David Finkel book, and 2 from Dolf de Roos. This one and the others educated me a great deal on the real estate market and opportunities available. Not all the ideas are for me..but some are, and I've since purchased 3 different types of properties using what I've learned, and I'm still looking for more opportunities. It's working in several ways. You use the concepts--the ones that work for you. It's not a bible--its an education and you apply it to your own situation and reality. My own real estate agent was scepticle too, and didn't think the techniques were on the up and up, or that the authors were really successful RE salespeople. But the results speak for themselves, if you use the tips to your own advantage in your own comfort zone. Yes, it does take some work no matter which choices you decide to use, and ethics. The book by Finkel & Conti is written very optimistically although it does tell about pitfalls. After reading it, you may decide to do nothing, but just be more aware, or take action in a different way for the real estate opportunities. But the financial rewards are there if you pick and choose how you want to apply them in your own situation.

Watered-down and of little value

I had to buy this book for the strings class at college. The whole class was bored to death for the whole semester, despite the good effort by the instructor to make the best of it. It looks like the publisher decided to divide the Essential Elements for Strings (which is a fine beginning book that I did several years ago) into 2 books in order to generate more business. If you already know the notes in the first position, don't waste your money on this book. There are lots of good post-absolute-beginner book for violin - Spotlight on Strings, ABCs of Violin, All for Strings, String Builder, or Essential Elements for Strings (NOT this 2000 thing). For private instructions for beginners, I would recommend Doflein Book 1 and Suzuki Book 1.

Lesson book

I understand that many instructors love this series, but I found ABCs of Violin a bit better for self study. The CDs are nice to hear what it is you are supposed to sound like and to play along with after you get the piece down. Do get both book 1 and 2 if this is the series you are going to use. Once you get going, it doesn't take long to want more pieces to play that you like. I play every piece in the book, but I play the pieces I like much more often for practice. If you push yourself you can get through book 1 and 2 in less than 2 months. Do get the books with both the CD and DVDs, they are a big help.
It may take hours of practice but when you start playing songs (pieces) you like it is a ball. I'm at 3 months now and am starting to learn Vivaldi's Spring, and a number of Fiddle tunes. Bach's Jesu (full solo version (advanced)) is still giving me fits, but I have just started learning second and third posistions.
I find the advanced Fiddle books teach, or at least make you learn, double stops much more than many of the violin lesson books.

I feel ripped off.

The included CD contains only 71 of the songs in the book. If you want the remaining songs you much purchase an additional CD for $12.99. The first book was not this way, its CD contained ALL the music to go along with the book. I feel tricked and ripped off.

About the Author

Editor Steven C. Hayes, PhD, is Nevada Foundation Professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada. An author of 34 books and more than 470 scientific articles, he has shown in his research how language and thought leads to human suffering, and has developed acceptance and commitment therapy, a powerful therapy method that is useful in a wide variety of areas. Hayes has been president of several scientific societies and has received several national awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy.

Editor Michael E. Levin, MA, is a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno and a research associate with Contextual Change, LLC. He has been a principal investigator on two federally funded grants, seeking to develop and test web-based acceptance and mindfulness-based interventions for the prevention and treatment of mental health problems. Levin has published over twenty articles and chapters related to addictive behaviors and acceptance and mindfulness-based interventions.

Greatest series of books ever!!!

Apart from the God-authored Holy Bible, the MacArthur New Testament Commentary is the greatest series of books in the history of the written word!

Dr. John MacArthur has been pastor of Grace Community Church in Los Angeles since 1969. During that time, he has preached verse-by-verse through the entire New Testament. The commentary chapter divisions are (essentially) derived from those individual sermons.

The essence of John MacArthur's credibility is his unswerving devotion to the Divine inspiration (authorship), absolute inerrancy, and complete authority of the Bible. Since the Bible is the true and infallible written revelation of God to mankind, Dr. MacArthur has said: "The only logical response to inerrant Scripture is to preach it expositionally. By that, I mean preaching in such a way that the meaning of the Bible passage is presented entirely and exactly as it was intended by God." This commitment results in content that is consistently and faithfully evangelical, because, as he explains: "Over the years of teaching the word of God without a lot of presuppositions, I tend to conclude whatever I believe the exegetical process yields."

But, although MacArthur has successfully disentangled himself from the straightjacket of agenda-driven or tradition-mandated, outcome-based theology--paying no tribute to conformity with any human opinion--he is by no means a doctrinal libertine. He is manifestly committed to declaring "the whole purpose of God" (Acts 20:27), and yet equally determined "not to exceed what is written" (2 Corinthians 4:6). This honest, forthright handling of Scripture renders MacArthur's work refreshingly free of the distortions and outright oppositions of the ear-tickling theology demanded by fallen human preference--which is so often shamelessly catered to and pandered to by the Lord's foes and friends alike!

In these commentaries (and, indeed, in any of MacArthur's books and sermons), the subject matter of Holy Scripture is always presented with credence as trustworthy, dynamic, living truth that has urgent and immediate application for every reader--as you would expect of words written by Almighty God Himself.. And MacArthur is a master at explaining the Bible with the Bible by comparing parallel passages, citing cross references with similar details, doctrines, or concepts, and appealing to Scriptural examples as the best demonstration of Scriptural principles. As a result, his sermons and commentaries have broad appeal and relevance in any and every society or time period. In addition to the trustworthy doctrinal content, MacArthur's commentaries are rich with fascinating historical and cultural details that bridge the gap of millennia and bring the reader closer to the events, people, and settings of the Bible. Many informative linguistic insights are also provided which further enhance the understanding of words and passages. Extensive quotations from various authors on related subjects and issues add a stimulating variety of perspective, which is accessible in the commentary chapters where they appear and in the bibliographies at the end of each volume.

The format of the commentary series is designed for maximum convenience, with helpful features for quick reference and more in-depth study. In every volume and every chapter, the message of the Word of God is presented with clarity and concision that will readily appeal to the most serious Bible student, and yet the content is not overly technical so as to be too laborious for a layman.

Most importantly, the rich information and detail that is presented about God and His truth is always accompanied by a convicting call to practical application in sincere obedience, as the Lord Jesus said: "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them" (John 13:17). This governing principle for the commentary project is given by Dr. MacArthur in the series Preface, which appears at the outset of every volume: "My prayer is that each reader will fully understand what the Holy Spirit is saying through this part of His word, so that His revelation may lodge in the minds of believers and bring greater obedience and faithfulness--to the glory of our great God."

ALL of John MacArthur's books are similarly valuable for their forthright, straightforward, faithful proclamation of the truth of God and the one true gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone (apart from any false considerations of human merit)--which is mankind's only hope of escaping God's righteous judgment against the sin we are all guilty of committing against Him. Some of my personal favorites, in addition to these commentaries, are--the MacArthur Study Bible (the greatest single-volume book in the history of the written word), One Perfect Life, The Gospel According to Jesus, Ashamed of the Gospel, The Love of God, and the Battle for the Beginning (among many others).

THIS BOOK SHOULD BE GIVEN TO EVERY MEMBER OF OUR GOVERNMENT.

Steyn takes aim at the people who have driven the US to this economic Armageddon with his usual razor wit. The man seems incapable of writing a dull sentence.

The cover of Steyn's book shows a dead Uncle Sam, flat on his back and with a toe tag. Steyn is not warning about a coming American decline. "We're already in it" he announces with gloomy relish, "What comes next is the fall--fast, sudden, off the cliff" (p 13).

And who is at the helm as this wreck is taking place, it's ... wince...Obama. Obama, who promised us hope and change and gave us that wild, draconian suggestion--in his Debt Commission--to raise "the age of Social Security eligibility to sixty-nine...By the year 2075" (p 8).

Gee. Imagine the courage it took to suggest that dramatic change.

To think that Michael Beschloss said about Obama the day after his election, "He's probably the smartest guy ever to become president" (p 55). I wouldn't be surprised to hear Beschloss has retired to France under an assumed name.

The Barackracy, as Steyn puts it, is going to lead us as far and as fast as they can away from the American Dream. In twenty years like this Steyn predicts we'll be "living the American Nightmare, with large tracts of the country reduced to the favelas of Latin American, the rich fleeing for Bermuda....and the rest trapped" (p 22).

Europe and all the American left imagined they could wrench money from the wealthy, or just print money if they had to, and provide endless nanny state happiness. Free medical care. Long vacations. Assured jobs with little hard work. Bliss and free lunches for all.

And it even worked for a while in Europe, when there were between seven to ten young adults being taxed for each senior citizen. Then a funny thing happened. The Europeans stopped reproducing. It was as if all of Europe woke up one day having decided to commit suicide. In Germany, for example, one out of every three women is childless. And the women who do have a child frequently only have only one.

So all too soon, across Europe there will be two young adults supporting every retired senior citizen.

Oh, and did I mention the debt the two young adults will also have to pay off due to the ever profligate welfare state?

Furthermore, Steyn points out how uncontrollable medical costs have been even for the most strictly controlled economies. In Canada the health budget "increased from nearly 35 percent...in 1999 to 46 percent today. In Ontario...it is set to reach 80 percent by 2030" (p 228).

Somehow I doubt those` two young adults in Ontario will be able to afford many vacations.

All this perfect storm of economic bad news is coming at the worst time possible, given our cultural state.

As Steyn puts it, "the story of the last forty years is the mainstreaming of rock -star morality" (p 232), not to mention the wreckage of traditional marriage. In the US over 40% of our children are illegitimate. "Entire new categories of crime have arisen in the wake of familial collapse, like the legions of daughters abused by their mom's latest live-in boyfriend" (p 234).

What will happen to all the children raised in fragmented families if the economy really collapses?

This is an important book, compelling and at times frightening. I hope it will be widely read.

A Brilliant, Unflinching Look at Western Civilization in Rapid Decline

As usual Mark Steyn manages to be hilarious, erudite, and dead-serious at the same time. He pulls no punches in After America, and while reading this excellent book, I frequently didn't know whether to laugh or cry. The author's command of the evidence is undeniable, and his vivid descriptions of the decline of Western Civilization are both frightening and familiar. Crushing debt, out-of-control immigration, denial, and near-universal insouciance are rapidly destroying the West -- right now.

Will the American people take heed of the dreary (and increasingly dangerous) state of our world and face up to our responsibilities as citizens of the sole super-power, or will we remain paralyzed and incapable of taking action until it is, quite simply, too late?

End Times?

Mark Steyn is quite an entertaining writer/speaker, spot on on a lot of issues, on a number of issues I disagree with him but then I'm somewhat moderate in my political views, neither way right or left on most things. Well-wrtten and amusing. He has a talent for the entertaining turn of phrase. He's right about the deficit for one thing. If the country doesn't get a handle on its finances things will get dire fairly soon. His comparison of America and Britain and the onset of decline is quite interesting. On the nature of Islam and the threat it poses I'm afraid he's correct, it's simply the current phase of an historic clash of civilizations based on fundamentally different ideas. This is a problematic view of things, another inconvenient truth we're trying to avoid, but at the very least we should be having a vigorous debate about it and what we should do before it's too late. It's unfortunate how in America these days people with different views on things tend to dig in on their positions with a take no prisoners mindset. The Bible says, "Let us sit down and reason together".
