No one liked Kant's ideas after reading Rachel's take on him

He can be a little biased against certain opinions. I felt his treatment of Kant was a bit negative. Yes, Kant was strange but he still had some decent ideas. It was interesting to see the reaction of the class I took which used this book: No one liked Kant's ideas after reading Rachel's take on him. When I took an ethics class prior to this with a book that treated him more "neutrally," about half the room seemed like they were partial to his ideas (if you can't tell, I was one of those).

There were some other spots where I was wondering: are you educating us about the perspectives, or trying to subtlety convince me of yours? But overall it is good.

Thin and pricey.

I know a lot of educational programs are using this "textbook", but the real winner is the author. It is expensive for simply reading somebody's opinion on different philosophical concepts without many footnotes to even refer to.

Highly Recommended

This is the main book we use in my Introduction to Ethics class at the University of Kansas and it does a very good job at disproving the 4 common "failed" ethical theories that most people know about and provides an understandable explanation of the viable ethical theories today such as Utilitarianism and Social Contract Theory. It does not read like a textbook, it is very captivating and I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in a general understanding of ethical theory.

An Amazing Story of a Stunning Product, and Inventor

I got this book because I have seen James Dyson on many advertisements for his famous vacuum cleaner and recently I found that he was a Billionaire. Billions from a vacuum? My curiosity was set afire. This book is more intriguing than I expected. It's a thorough and humorous autobiography combined with many trenchant statements about the shortcomings of modern business. More important, it sets forth Dyson's successful approach to product design.

I've written a review about the English scientist, Freeman Dyson, and this is about the product-designer-industrialist, James Dyson. There is no indication they are related. Both are fascinating individuals.

Growing up in the 50s and 60s Dyson seems to have had a delightful childhood, albeit with a few bumps. He was rather good as an artist and ended up going to Art School. Not being able to decide on where to park his talents he tried a number of areas. He ended up, essentially, as an industrial designer although it was "interior design" for which he was awarded a diploma.

Several things you can't miss in this autobiography are that Dyson was definitely always following his own drumbeat. Further, his persistence and ability to shake off defeat is incredible -- it would make Winston Churchill seem like a softy. He is a very good observer of people and businesses. And, whether you agree with him or not, he sets forth some very concrete principles as to what makes a good, and profitable, product. He says that Henry Ford and Thomas Edison were guiding lights for him. In part that seems true, but in part very wrong. I'll let you make the determination.

For anyone who likes a brisk and humorous story combined with some radical business wisdom, this is a very good book. Moreover, it should be required reading in every single department of industrial (product) design at universities and would be a worthwhile supplemental read for those in engineering.

Be an engineer, designer and entrepreneur all in one

"Against the odds" is an apropos title. What we now celebrate as the "overnight success" and "the genius" of Dyson products is anything but, and this is the book that tells this fascinating story. It took Dyson over a decade to turn the original "eureka" moment for his vacuum cleaner into a product on the market, which includes finding bank loans, years of day to day R&D, years of unsuccesful attemps at licensing deals, oh and half a dozen legal battles in between. Even just reading this story makes you wonder how James Dyson managed to get through it all.

This is a true entrepreneurial story, with all the ups and downs, and dozens of interesting insights. Dyson's perspective and attack on the state of British manufacturing and funding is in itself a must read for every entrepreneur. Additionally, we get a glimpse at his no-nonsense, "Edisonian" approach at innovation: don't worry about the experts, get to it, test one thing at a time, iterate, improve, rinse, repeat. It took Dyson 1000+ prototypes to arrive at his first vacuum cleaner.

This is a book that every existing or aspiring entrepreneur, designer, and engineer will find something in (spoiler: don't pick one, be all three). Great read.

An entrepreneur's struggle and testimonial

This is a great story of a stubborn, possibly cantankerous, designer turned manufacturing entreprenur. It was a real page-turner and I couldn't put it down.

This Brit took on the vacuum sweeper industry worldwide and now is introducing washing machines that may be technologically superior -- just like his sweepers. He has invented and introduced several products to the world.

Here's what you can get from this book:

1) A humorous story of entrepreneurial struggle and then success,

2) Dyson's rules for product design,

3) Dyson's rules for start-ups for manufacturing companies,

4) Some great words to improve your vocabulary (he's British remember),

5) Lessons in patents and the lengths to which you will have to defend them,

6) How entrenched product manufacturers will buy companies to squelch a superior technology to keep it off the market,

7) How your wayward son who goes off to study art may actually end up richer than you.

8) How to protect yourself from unscrupulous competitors (are there any other kind?)

Most important of all are his rules for design and for startups.

His basic rule for coming up with new products goes like this:

Find a durable consumer product that every household buys. Find out what bugs people about this product. Use technology to dramatically improve its performance -- preferably find the technology in other industries. Look for new materials providing superior durability. Prototype, prototype, prototype. Test, test, test. Then design outward for style and ergonomics (Form follows function.) Don't listen to others. Don't hire consultants. Market and manufacture it yourself. You can learn any subject in 6 months (I think that's a little quick but the point is well made). Keep improving (Japanese style Kaisen) once you have developed your new product (he's developed many improved models once he went into production).

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it heartedly. I wondered though if Dyson wasn't a bit too cantankarous for his own good. I often wondered why he ended up in so many lawsuits and business deals gone awry. Were all his competitors ruthless? Or was he difficult to establish business relationships with? We will never know, and perhaps it's not that important. But there's lots to learn by reading this book. I understand he has another book, self-published, just on the design and invention aspects and I hope to get that book also. I'll check with the wife to see if we need another sweeper. He says they really suck. In fact it sucks up to three times more than competitors. Well, that's his humor not mine.

This book should be required reading at all business schools.

Perry Martin is group manager for reliability and process engineering in the Sacramento, California, division of National Technical Systems. His experience includes more than a decade of performing electronic failure analysis and environmental quality testing for the United States Air Force at McClellan Air Force Base in California. There he provided support and expertise in a number of areas, including the testing and repair of equipment such as avionics, crash and failure investigations for AF weapon systems, and contractor fraud inquiries. He has briefed both members of Congress and the Air Force Chief of Staff on his findings on faults in Air Force weapons systems.

The "Bible" in Failure Analysis

After I read this book, I passed it to my Engineers, and afterwhich I never have a chance to access it anymore, as both my Engineers just won't let go!
This is indeed "THE BIBLE" for Failure Analysis. It covers most of the techniques needed for each type of FA, like X-ray imaging, SAM, Thermal imaging, Metallography, Chemical Characterization, SEM/EDX, and Electronic Failures. The best of it all is that in Part 2, it is organized in terms of equipment techniques; in part 3, it is organized in terms of products, like PCB, PCBA, connection, component, etc. As such it give you the flexibility either go to Part 2 and learn about how and what types of failure analysis a particular equipment can perform, or go to Part 3 and find out the sequence of which equipments is to used first for a particular failure mode.
However, I need to highlight that the though there are tons of photos in the book, the quality of the photos need lots of improvement. Many a times, it takes me long time to figure out what's in the photos. Maybe some highlights or markings at the particular spot of interest in the comparison of the photos would help some novice readers to appreciate better

We are really dealing with a first class book on the subject. In it you can find a lot of greatly useful informations about F.A. from the testing techniques to the study cases.
To me, what I found impressive is the detailed description of the analysis testing techniques covering the technology description of them and the correct case in which recall them.

A superb reference

This book is a very useful reference for physical failure mechanisms in electrical equipment, and for the methods to detect those failures. I can't imagine any electrical engineer who would not refer to this book time and time again. Different mechanisms are described in detail and specific methods are given for some inspection techniques. There are a lot of hard numbers in here which makes the book much more than just a high-level overview; for example, relative distributions of failure types are given for different component types (eg. a problem with a rectifier diode will be a short-circuit about 51% of the time). The author goes into quite a lot of detail but the information is well-organised and easy to read even for those who might not be involved in detail hardware design, inspection and analysis. It is, as far as I am aware, very comprehensive.

As the other reviewers have noted it would be better if the pictures were a little clearer and perhaps in colour, and if a newer revision was available. However, for about $100 you will get enormous value for money with this excellent reference book and you will want to keep it within easy reach.

About the Author

Anthony Sleva is president of Sleva Associates, an electrical consulting and training company. He is a registered Professional Engineer with a BSEE degree from Pennsylvania State University. During his career, he has designed electrical systems for nuclear generating stations; designed 500-230 KV, 230-69 KV, 138-12 KV and 69-12 KV substations; provided technical support to power dispatchers, system operators and plant operators; and developed technical training programs for technicians, drafters, designers and technical clerks. Mr. Sleva specializes in the analysis of power system events that cause the loss of customer load and/or the initiation of emergency load control procedures as well as events that may have been caused by incorrect protective relay actuations.

From the ground up

The text of this book starts with bringing together all of the information which people need to understand fundamentally regarding protection systems. From there it goes very well in the parameters of operation and very good detail of the material in which to show what is permissible and what is potentially catastrophic. The formulas, graphs, along with the schematics are very detailed for even those who want to go into the Power Systems profession and have no experience. I would recommend this regardless of the price as this needs to be part of a professional library for the lineman wanting to learn more or the potential Electrical Engineer in need of a solid foundation of understanding the equipment.

Good book.

Great book for showing how to develop actual relay settings. Not many other practical relay books exist out there like this one that actually walk the reader through the development of settings, both the "how" and the "why". This book will literally step the reader through example problems on what values, equations, and considerations to use when setting protective relays. It's almost like having a personal mentor guide you through protective relay applications and settings. I haven't gotten through the entire book, but I don't believe it has motor or generator settings/applications. I would make that addition as a suggestion to the author for the next edition of this book. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book.
