Another great book from America's Test Kitchen! LOVE their books!!!

A truly beautiful book. America's Test Kitchen always provides excellent information and one can learn more about cooking and baking at any age or at any level of cooking skill. Best products to best ways to prepare recipes and "Why it works" are the two BEST reasons to have in your cookbook library.
I've read many complaints about photos in black & white, but there are plenty of color photos to show the completed dish and the steps along the way are ones mostly printed in black & white. This was not a problem nor did it affect the outcome of making any recipe. Recipes are written with easy to follow steps and use ingredients that are available in most any grocery store.
A great book for one's library or as a gift for a beginner cook or as a bridal shower gift. Many treasures to be found in here and I'm looking forward to seeing how many recipes I can create that match the taste and look of the photos.

A wonderful book of tried and true recipes. Many good pictures and lots of pertinent information about the ingredients chosen and procedure to get the best results. An excellent addition to any cook book collection. Would make a very appreciated gift.

Unmarketing = how to not be a bonehead online, especially when you didn't notice you were being one

Scott and Alison did it again. They made me question my habits, especially on social media. Although I also bought the original version of Unmarketing, it was definitely valuable to get the new edition.

Pros:
- They have the best footnotes ever. Gasp. They actually make you laugh.
- They use lots of examples so you can see other people puking up terrible ads (and then ask yourself if you've been a jackhole like that)
- It's all about being human - that you're always marketing, even when you're commenting on Aunt Sally's vacation photo. It reminds me of how I tell people they're always interviewing at work. It's the concept that you're always creating the experience of who you are to the rest of the world.

Cons:
- Yes, if you already bought the book in 2009, you need to buy it again. Get over that. It's pocket change. And you don't really need a Foursquare strategy right now, do you?
- It's almost 300 pages, so you might get scared. It's okay, they make it fun. Or maybe that's just my issue. Long books scare me. Okay, yes, it is my personal issue.
- They will call you on behaviors that make you look in the mirror. Yes I have a Pinterest account and I don't really use it much. Yet I have a "social media presence" there that is linked from my website. They tell you that's a bonehead move because you're not present for the conversation and the community there.

I enjoy this! I'm only partway through, but this is a great resource. Funny and inspiring, I'm making a note of things that work and things I should run from -- FAST! The author is accessible on social media, and he and his wife have a terrific weekly podcast (The Unpodcast - I'm one of the loyal 6 listeners he talks about). Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to this upcoming revised work.

Dan Abnett is the author of the Horus Heresy novels The Unremembered Empire, Know No Fear and Prospero Burns, the last two of which were both New York Times bestsellers. Abnett's Gaunt's Ghost saga hits its stride

It is in Dan Abnett's third installment of his well-done Gaunt's Ghosts Saga that he finally hits his stride. In Necropolis, Colonel-Commissar Ibrahim Gaunt and his Tanith First and Only Regiment are thrown into the meat-grinder type of warfare seen when fought within a city. The hive city in question is Vervunhive and Gaunt and his men must help protect and save the city from a rival hive-city that has fallen under the sway of Chaos. This massive civil war takes a large toll on the men of Tanith. The political backstabbing seen in Ghostmaker is continued in Necropolis, some of the jealousy and scheming of rival Imperial Guard commanders having a detrimental and deadly effect on the outcome of certain battles for Vervunhive.

One reviewer has compared Necropolis as a fictional and scifi account of the Battle of Stalingrad. I must agree with this comparison, but I must also point out that it also share some similarities with the siege of Moscow during World War Two. Abnett's writing style has improved with this installment and part of this may be that he has become comfortable with the characters and their motivations. Abnett's becoming one of the premiere writers thats come out of the Black Library branch of Games Workshop. Here's to hoping he continues writing more books about Gaunt and his Ghosts.

Not the best military sci-fi I've read, but not bad.

The third of Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series, Necropolis is set in a hive-world. Unlike the first, second, and fourth books, plot here takes second place to battle: Necropolis reads more like "a history of the Vervunhive siege with focus on Commissar Gaunt and his men", than "a story about Gaunt and his men during the Vervunhive siege."
This isn't inherently bad. Abnett knows how to write combat, and his large-scale ("under Colonel X, the second regiment moved west to reinforce the gates") descriptions are as good as those of any military historian. The action scenes are good, and there's enough of them. And yes, there's at least a token semblance of plot.
One reason I like the Ghosts series is the number of recurring characters. Perhaps fifteen or twenty 'named' characters who show up again and again; I like the familiarity, and the occasional character developments (some characters don't change - Larkin and Corbec are basically the same at the end of this book as they were at the start of the first - but others get promoted, learn things, or whatever.)
Overall, excellent multithreaded military sci-fi. The quality of the action and Abnett's excellent writing more than makes up for the plot deficiencies.

The best ghost novel so far

Necropolus is the third Gaunt's Ghosts novel, set in the nightmare science fantacy universe of Warhammer 40K. The series chronicals the exploits of Commissar Ibram Gaunt and his regiment of Imperial Guard soldiers known as the Ghosts. It might be helpful to read the books in order, but it is not really necessary. In fact, since this is the best book in the series by far, reading it first might set you up for a let down.
The first two books in the series are good, but they center mostly around one combat story after another. Necropolus goes far beyond that. It gives a very imaginative and in depth description of Vervunhive, "a mighty hive-city besieged by an unrelenting foe". The book is rich with characters and situations which yield a complete picture of the hive-city from it's feuding noble houses to it's sturdy workers, to it's seedy underground. The enemy is also imaginative and well developed.
The seige of the hive-city is descibed in the style of a well written history book, complete with a map of the hive. This is a refreshing change from the other books in this series which tend toward the heroic "against all odds" vignettes. Only until towards the end of the book do we get the obligatory death defying exploits. The ending becomes predictable, but is still enjoyable.
I enjoyed this book, it is a good shoot'em up with alot of background and action. I think any reader would agree, and I think 40K fanatics will find this the best of the latest generation of Games Workshop novels.

Great reference to NY mineral collecting

This book gives some great insight into collecting minerals in the various types of bedrock in NY. It breaks occurrences into sedimentary, crystalline and fracture locations. Each site has significance, location (coordinates) and history, geology and origin, minerals, similar occurrences, and references. This is the first guide that I've read which mentions that a few sites have been reclaimed in the southern ADKs - could have saved me the hours of hiking around... You cant go wrong with a NY mineral collecting guide co-authored by. Steve Chamberlain.

misleading title

This book is NOT about all the minerals found in NYS, its about nice photos of SELECTED minerals found in a few localities within New York state. The majority of these localities are closed or no longer accessible to collectors, so forget about trying to get to most of these locations. Not comprehensive and totally leaves out any minerals found within the 5 boroughs. Not recommened unless you like colorful coffee table mineral books.

Udon Artbooks - Always Quality - This is blissful

I have the Darkstalkers Graphic File book and a prior reviewer mentioned
that much of this book is recycled from that. This is true. However, I
don't regret having purchased both. This book is laid out perfectly,
with full-page tribute/poster artwork to start and each individual game
art to follow. You'll find yourself reading about every step of the process:
original design, concepts, troubles & concerns and
a retrospective look at what the artist might change today looking back. It's
a depth I've seen in some books but never to the extent Darkstalkers Official
Complete Works has and it keeps me going back. As I run a site that
collects Street Fighter & Darkstalkers art, most of the game-specific art is
nothing new, but they are large pictures and are wonderful. This book collects
everything including Darkstalkers Resurrection from 2013.

However, that's only half the book. Covering all the games in the series (and
referring to them by their Japanese names where applicable), the book then
goes on to supplemental materials and art where Darkstalkers fighters appeared
in other titles. While I expected Marvel vs. Capcom and Capcom Fighting Jam to
be in there, I was surprised to see even titles like Namco X Capcom and Cross Edge.
Once again we're treated to sketches, concept art, level background design,
calendars, posters, promo art...(I could really go on for a while). This
book also includes translated interviews, character bios and more. The last
sections of the book are jam packed with images.

I may be gushing here, but having collected several hundred dollars' worth of
art books, I've seen few include quite so much. I have some in my collection that
warrant a gander every so often, but with so many visuals and so much accompanying
text, it's fun to return and I haven't nearly read it all yet.

Finally, the quality of the paper is high and the binding is solid. It's not the
best in my collection and by far not the worst.

I think Udon has improved their game and put out one of the best collections. For
any fan of Vampire/Darkstalkers, I think this is a no-brainer.

The One to Get

In my years as a Darkstalkers fan I’ve acquired over half a dozen books based on/around the series, including just about every comic/manga compilation, artbook and game guide released in English. So I feel confident in saying if you’re only looking to get one Darkstalkers book, this is it.

This book is overflowing with development and behind-the-scenes sketches, most of which I had never seen before. As well as reproductions of familiar promotional images, for the most part printed bigger and better than I have seen previously. Just about every image is accompanied by brief commentary ranging from the silly to the insightful by the artist who created it. There are also 16 pages in the back of the book devoted to interviews with the series developers.

There’s really no comparison when it comes to English language Darkstalkers art/coffee table books. “Darkstalkers: Graphic File” is a surprisingly anemic book which is full of move-lists (which you could get online free), microscopic pictures/screenshots and small/hard-to-read-character bio text, along with an overview of series games and merchandise in the back. “Darkstalkers Tribute” is literally just a fan art collection. “Tribute” has got some good art in it of course, most of which isn’t reproduced in “Complete Works”, but you could get a good chunk, maybe most, of said contents for free by browsing deviantart.

Bottom Line: This is the definitive English-language book on the series for Darkstalkers fans or fans of gaming art and history in general.

Darkstalkers not just a game art book, but a inspirational artist collector book.

I love to look at other peoples Art as it inspires my own artistic creativity. This book is full of beautiful art from the history of DARKSTALKER games. And I recommend anyone this book whether your just a fan of game art or looking for inspiration for your own character creations. This book takes you thru the evolution of the characters over the games and years. And makes you wish you had the games to play now if you never had them or just don't anymore.

Only thing I wish more is that people had videos with books like this from start to finish of a character, in a tutorial view showing you how to make or remake that image, and show off their studio setup what equipment they use and recommend for what ever type of art your into. I think something like that with a book like this would make it 100 times better. I would love to see them actually making the characters.

Great book that I would recommend to anyone

I started with "speak English like American". I studied and felt a lot of fun, together with my daughter, who came to USA when she was a few months old. So the readers need not have to be ESL students. It is a great book that I recommend to any of my friends.

This book, does not have a simple story that is so fun ( Amy's books and stories have been in our daily life between my daughter and I!)

However, it is also very useful. I like the cartoons that help me to understand and memorize the phrases. I also like the part of "origin" and hope she adds this for each word/phrase/idiom in her books.

Some words belong to different classes. I hope Amy can also mark it in the future. Of course, even for same class, people use different words based on different background as well as where they were born, where they grew up. some use those words a lot. It sounds like they just talk exactly what Amy has shown us!

As a Chinese, there are so many differences between my native language and American English. However, I try to find something mutual. I do find some. See, "Look at something from a different angle", "get something off my chest", "think out side of the box". When I finally found a similar Chinese word/phrase to match these words, I feel excited at it.

I am looking forward to seeing more of her books. And thanks for Amazon, such a great place, so that I can know her new book comes out. I ask our local library to buy the new book and I can first read it.

Great Book

There are not that many books like this that help you understand and teach you how to use idioms properly. I've learned many useful expressions that I now use on a daily basis. It's fun!! I feel more confident when I started using new expressions. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to master the great modern English language.
