Steve Leinwand is the author of the bestselling Heinemann title Accessible Mathematics: Ten Instructional Shifts That Raise Student Achievement. He is Principal Research Analyst at the American Institutes for Research in Washington, D.C., where he supports a range of mathematics education initiatives and research. Powerful, Accessible Strategies; Immediately Usable

There are a lot of books and programs out there that claim to have the answers to improving math learning and instruction in the United States.
As a teacher, it is difficult not to become overwhelmed and cynical as districts invest millions in one mandated program after another that are supposed to solve all the problems if only we would implement it correctly, only to have each program successively thrown out for a new one within just one or two years of implementation. Yet, most of us try to remain optimistic and continually try to take the best of each new thing that comes down the pipe to be better teachers.

The title of this book is very appropriate in that it clearly stresses a focus on instruction. Far too often, the discussion of math education in America is limited to content/curriculum and teachers are left to their own art and instinct for delivery. In truth, instruction does have some science to it and teachers can learn how to be more effective in content delivery. Teachers like myself who have been teaching for many years have seen the pendulum swings in curriculum and pedagogy several times, but the ideas in this little book are relatively timeless.

This book has several things going for it.

1. It is short and to the point, with clear examples. People are busy, and yet it is not unreasonable to read this book in one or two afternoons without feeling like you wasted your time. In a few minutes of reading, you can find a clear idea of how to improve your instruction immediately. You won't be bombarded with too many ideas to absorb, nor will you have to trudge through pages of over-pontification to get the point.

2. The 10 skills are reasonable, research-based, powerful, and possible. All of these practices will improve any teacher's instruction and improve the learning of the students. A little more planning may be required for a lesson than the typical "Section 5-4, polygon area, examples 1 and 2 and problems 1-10." Instead, a teacher would need to think about systematic review, key questions to ask students, how to foster discussion on the topic, how to address misconceptions, how to assess learning, etc. So, more thought goes into the "how" and "why" of content presentation and what activities the students will be doing in class than sometimes happens in the real world American math classroom.

3. It is focused on math instruction and is applicable to all levels. Math teachers everywhere know the frustration of books and staff development that supposedly apply to all content areas but really do not easily transfer to a math classroom. This book is specifically about teaching math. Each of the 10 instructional skills are applicable across all grade levels, although many examples seem to come from upper elementary math standards, and fewer from higher or lower levels. As a high school teacher, however, I did not find it overly difficult to relate the examples to what I would do in high school. In fact, many of the examples, although technically at an upper elementary level, are ones I could directly use without modification in even an honors high school class, because the focus of the problems is generally on thinking/reasoning skills that apply at all levels and ages and that the majority of our students are sorely lacking. The selected examples show how "rich" problems can be accessed at a wide variety of depth and difficulty depending on the readiness of the students and intentions of the instructor.

I will be able to use the ideas presented here to immediate result in my classroom. Although the skills are logical and simple, there is still a factor of skill development in employing them that is understood by the author. Instruction is skill-based, just as is, say, playing basketball, and skills of questioning students, developing number sense, systematically reviewing, employing language-rich context, and so on, should improve over time as practiced.

Easy-to-Implement Ways to Increase Stuent Achievement

If you wish to improve the quality of your mathematics instruction without having to invest dozens of hours, Accessible Mathematics by Steven Leinwand is for you. Mr. Leinwand's 10 instructional shifts represent a common sense approach to strengthening your pedagogy and making math class more productive immediately. The book is a quick read and would be great for your next book study. I recommend this book to all busy teachers who are looking for small instructional changes that work right away to increase students' achievement.

Simple Strategies that Really Make a Difference

I loved the simplicity of this book. It is clear that many of our elementary mathematics teachers in the United States love to teach reading. This book takes the best strategies already embraced by our elementary teachers as successful ways to teach literacy, and relates them to the the teaching of mathematics.

However, don't be fooled! These strategies are not only for elementary teachers, but for ALL teachers of mathematics. I have read many books on the teaching of mathematics, and this book certainly ranks among my "top 5". If you lead math teachers or are a mathematics teacher yourself, this should definitely be on your reading list.

PreSchool-Grade 3--Dexter the dachshund is an underdog--literally. Cleevis the tomcat enjoys demonstrating how he can stand right over Dex and not even ruffle his fur. What the pooch lacks in size, however, he makes up for in determination, and when he decides to stop just dreaming of being a hero and devote his life to becoming one, he is unstoppable. The first step on his journey is the library, where the poodle who assists him is wearing glasses and sports what looks suspiciously like a bun. He sets himself a strict exercise regime, pushing himself to the limit: "Even at bedtime, when he wanted to flop on the rug with his tongue hanging out, Dex forced himself to circle five extra times." He finally achieves his goal (his muscle-man poses are priceless), dons a Superdog suit, and proceeds to use his hard-earned prowess for the good of all. When he eventually comes to the rescue of a stranded Cleevis, a new partnership is formed with "twice the brains and triple the brawn." The story line may be a bit predictable, but the Buehners' considerable talents render it fresh and funny. The author has created a lovable and memorable character in the endearing and stalwart Dex, and the illustrator's retro-style artwork is charming. As in Fanny's Dream (Dial, 1996), he has added to the fun by hiding cats, rabbits, and even a Tyrannosaurus rex in the clouds and shadows. PreS-Gr. 1. Lots of kids want to be superheroes, and apparently so do certain animals. Two new books make good use of every child's longing to be the biggest, bravest, strongest. In Supersnouts! young pig Hamlet notices masked men entering the barnyard and alerts two older pigs. They slip into the costumes of the Superhero Pig Patrol and allow Hamlet to get some "on-the-hoof" training as a superhero. He causes almost as much trouble as he solves before triumphantly catching the burglars (though the actual capture is somewhat abbreviated). This rather slight story has a high quantity of hammy jokes along with plenty of bangs and booms. The attraction here is the zippy watercolor artwork, so action-filled that each spread practically quivers with movement. Although the pictures are not cartoon-style, this raucous offering does have elements of that robust medium.

Superdog has the same energy, but less slapstick and more heart. Dexter is a small dog, who decides that the way to get respect, especially from ridiculing cat Cleevis, is to become a superhero. He exercises, reads up on other superheroes, and even gets a costume. Almost immediately, he is tackling purse snatchers, rescuing rodents, and in a dramatic denouement, saves Cleevis, who is stuck in a tree. This has a stronger story than Supersnouts, but again it is the artwork that really shines. Solid shapings, surprising perspectives, and thick paints in dynamic colors combine for artwork that practically jumps off the page. There's plenty of wit, too, such as in the set of six small pictures in which Dexter shows off his newly developed muscles. Pure fun (mixed with a little forgiveness). Ilene Cooper

This is one of my favorite read aloud books for both second and third graders

This is one of my favorite read aloud books for both second and third graders. I've found that I refer back to this book many times throughout the year. I've used it for different teaching points as well. By the end of the year, many kids refer back to it for examples too. A fun book and it teaches a great lesson about never giving up. The kids love it especially the part about Dex's muscles. The illustrations are very colorful and enticing as well.

classroom favorite

I read this book to my kindergarten class every year to introduce persistence and not giving up on your goals. It's got a great message and the story is humorous for the kids. Dexter, the superdog, becomes our "role model". I bought a stuffed dog like Dexter and the students take turns bringing the book and dog home. The other teachers have started borrowing my copy to give their students the same lesson.

A wonderful story that shows what a TRUE hero is

We absolutely love this book. My son is 4 and has started showing interest in Superheros. I wanted to draw his attention away from the commercial blockbuster superheros and really have him understand the meaning behind what a true hero is. This book sends a wonderful message and is full of colorful graphics and adorable characters. It is definitely full of excitement for young minds. It has become one of my son's favorite books and we are very happy to have purchased it.

When Donovan ends up on the carpet, the district superintendent accidentally adds his name to the roll of gifted students at the Academy for Scholastic Distinction. Although he flounders at his new school, Donovan ends up humanizing a program that focuses on academic achievement and ignores the social aspects of students' success. From his first day when he startles the robotics team by naming their robot, to his saving the class from summer school by drafting his pregnant sister as the answer to a missed credit in Human Development, Donovan finds that his gift lies in helping the smart kids by teaching them how to be "normal." Using an ancestor who survived the Titanic as inspiration, Donovan has a goofy kindness that charms characters and readers alike. Reminiscent of Stanley Yelnats and Joey Pigza, he careens through life much like the out-of-control globe from Atlas's statue. Reinforces untrue stereotypes about gifted kids

This book has such a great premise -- a highly impulsive student accidentally gets placed in a program for gifted students -- that I couldn't wait to read it. I was so disappointed at the portrayal of gifted kids in this book, and wonder if Korman has ever actually set foot in a gifted school so he can understand these complicated kids. Many gifted kids don't even know they're gifted, and most don't know their IQ, but every chapter starts with a person's name and IQ score. IQ is a great place to begin to understand intelligence, but a lousy place to end, and the education of gifted children encompasses social and emotional needs that reach beyond a number and the stereotypical nerd persona that Korman clings to in this book. The storyline wanted to be funny, but reached for that at the expense of credibility. That, combined with the horrendous stereotyping, destroyed any redeeming features the book had.

Disappointing and Frustrating

Ungifted had a great premise, a lovable hero in Donovan, and our state librarian association's top award for kid lit.
Please, please don't subject your gifted kids to this book, especially if they are into FLL or FIRST robotics. The characters, setting, and even plot are so offensive my robotics-obsessed, gifted middle schooler ditched the book a third of the way in. He's asked me twice if that's what "real" people think of he and his friends. Sadly son, yes. And that's why this author is a best seller -- he appeals to the kids who have to be bribed to read books. My frustration lies in the fact that his story would have improved with real kids and an accurate portrayal of robotics. The fantasy world he created worked against his theme and plot.

Great Hyperbole

I can't believe the "gifted" people here who missed the point of this book. I love the way Korman employs hyperbole to poke fun at schools' evaluation and separation of people based upon labels, including "giftedness." I think the book is hilarious and discussion-worthy due to many witty elements Korman incorporates. For example, Dr. Shultz, the superintendent of the school district has an IQ slightly below "gifted," while Mr. Osborn, the teacher at the gifted school has an IQ slightly above. Yet, this separation is enough to warrant Mr. Osborne teaching at a plush academy while Dr. Shultz, who is smart enough to have earned a PhD and lead the entire school district, doesn't even qualify. It's strange to see some people so offended and take themselves so seriously, comparing themselves to the characters in the book. The IQs are not meant to be serious, people. I mean, Noah has an IQ of 206, and all it takes is a little research on IQs to reveal the point of this. I love the way this book is able to make fun of the system and show that there is much more to people and life than labels. Very well done! :)

Solid Introduction to the Law in the Hebrew Scriptures

It is a shame that this book is out of print. It offers a solid introduction the law in the Hebrew Scriptures Law. Patrick begins the study be reviewing the place of critical scholarship and biblical law. He then moves on to the various 'books' of law in the Hebrew Scriptures dedicating a chapter to the Ten Commandments, the Book of the Covenant, Deuteronomic law, Holiness Code and Priestly Law. He rounds the book off with two final chapters and a postscript. The second to last chapter discusses the difference between written and unwritten law. The author points out that the earliest codes of law were essentially written forms of an unwritten law code (descriptive). He claims that it wasn't until Deuteronomic school that the law became synonymous with the written law (proscriptive). He continues this argument by claiming that with the love commandment (in MK 12.28ff & Pars.) the law reverts `back' to an unwritten law. The final chapter discusses the place of covenant making in Old Testament law.
This book seems to cover most of the main issues dealing with the law in the Hebrew Scriptures (at least at the time of its writing) and presents the material in an accessible way. I had two minor complaints of the book. The first criticism I had of the book was the lack of cultural anthropological insights in discussing some of the law codes (especially the laws dealing with the cult). The second criticism may only be my perception, but I seemed to notice a slight prejudice against post-exilic writings (DTRH, Holiness Code, and Priestly Law). These minor quibbles aside this book is a good place to start for learning more about law in the Hebrew Scriptures.

An intriguing journey into a past that affects over half the people on the planet

If you're interested in finding out more about ancient Jewish practices and law, Dale Patrick's book is an excellent introduction. It may be 30 years old, but the Old Testament hasn't changed for centuries. Patrick's analysis is very well-organized and thorough. His work is based on solid historical methodology, and he is careful to explain that methodology before he begins this intriguing journey into a past that affects over half the people on the planet. Many books on this subject are dry husks, appreciated only by scholars. Not so with Old Testament Law.
Biblical criticism is still controversial, so if you believe the Bible should be followed, not analyzed, this is not the book for you. Most students of the OT are now familiar with the various "sources" from which the final Masoretic text was composed, called J, E, P and D for "Yawhist", "Elohist", "Priestly" and "Deuteronomist". These different textual traditions are explained and the reasoning behind this approach is a basic assumption of the book. This is only the beginning. Patrick takes the reader on a trip that begins with the 10 commandments, through Deuteronomy, examines the holiness codes and the concept of the covenant, and ends up asking "What is the meaning of this law?"
Well-written, with a good bibliography for further study, and thoughtful.
An excellent companion to this book is Martin Noth's The Laws of the Pentateuch.

A former Amazon executive offers an insider’s perspective on the company’s guiding principles. Amazon has had its share of coverage, including Brad Stone’s�The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon(2013). But this lean book cuts a different way. Rossman, an executive at Amazon who left to become a managing director at a consulting firm, weaves his own war stories around Amazon’s 14 leadership principles. While these principles are no secret, Rossman brings them to life with insightful commentary of his own. Each chapter begins with a salient “Leaders at Amazon…” statement, e.g., “Leaders at Amazon focus on the key outputs for their business and deliver them with the right quality and in a timely fashion. Despite setbacks, they rise to the occasion and never settle.” Rossman then offers observations and anecdotes illuminating the corresponding idea. For example, in Chapter 1, “Obsess Over the Customer,” he discusses Amazon’s three customer desires, which the company considers “its holy trinity”—price, selection and availability. Instead of generalities, however, Rossman shares specific insider details that make each principle more dramatic. Smooth and Interesting Read. Truly enjoyed reading The Amazon Way.

The Amazon Way was a smooth and interesting read, and I could relate to the principles and examples presented throughout the book.

As a retired Marine, I could relate to what The Amazon Way said about having a “Bias for Action” and “Diving Deep” to get at root causes to understand issues and put into place mechanisms to simplify processes and drive results. The value-added benefit of reading The Amazon Way is that it provides insights and practical examples on going “one step further” - designing the data capturing mechanisms and metrics that will demonstrate actuals and identify the weak spots that need to be addressed and improved upon in order to keep an organization moving forward with confidence and productivity.

I would recommend The Amazon Way to military personnel – both active and those who have left the service, as a vehicle by which to understand how the leadership, management, and war fighting skills acquired while serving in the armed forces can be applied to the private sector.

Additionally, I would recommend that The Amazon Way be read as a book study by an organization, military or private sector, in order to get folks into a mindset that will drive innovation, force an “open kimono” approach to addressing issues, and most importantly, driving results in ways not previously thought possible.

The Amazon Way informs how the collective genius of an organization can be tapped into and utilized to achieve results.

Great book. Laminate and take to the field.

Good if you don't have time for "The Everything Store"

It's a handy, compact package of Bezos-think, but if you already read Brad Stone's "The Everything Store," this is basically just the Cliff's Notes version. If you haven't read that one and don't have time to, this will give you the management takeaways without the biography and corporate history.

The Heart of Amazon

If you are looking for a way to improve how you manage your own company or are just curious about an inside look at how amazon works this is a great place to start. Of all the books I've read on amazon this one seems the most useful and insightful. By reading this book you can gain knowledge that will allow you to apply lessons learned to your own business.

I feel this book effectively captures the essence of amazon's leadership. There are many quotes and letters by Jeff Bezos which reveal his brilliance and also dedication to customers. He really does seek to delight customers and wants them to have the best experience on the web. Some of his comments are also lol funny. This book explains how Jeff Bezos has built a culture that meets extremely high standards. While other authors have perhaps guessed at what Jeff is thinking, John Rossman actually really seems to know and bases his information off Jeff's words. The heart of amazon is finally revealed. John Rossman excels at paying attention to the details.

Most books on amazon tend to be highly analytical but this one goes even deeper to the core of what amazon is. Working at amazon seems to be a character building process. Some of the stories of what amazon has done to keep customers happy are also amazing. The technology is mind blowing.

I especially enjoy books written by former employees and this one is no exception. Since John Rossman used to work for amazon he has the inside scoop and he presents people who work there in a very positive light.

What this book does well is capture the excitement of amazon. I read this book in one day and had trouble putting it down. It was that interesting. Now I understand the depths to which Jeff Bezos goes to make amazon my favorite website. This book made me wonder what surprises are awaiting us all in the near future.

So I felt this was an intellectually invigorating read and I especially enjoyed Jeff's letters to his stockholders. This book gives sage advice on how to manage a company that is customer-centric. It also explains what attracts high-performing employees. You can't afford not to read this book if you own your own company. It is that good!

About the Author
Roger Scruton is a writer and philosopher, currently an adjunct scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, and a Fellow of Blackfriars Hall, Oxford. He is the author of over thirty books, which have been widely translated, and a regular writer in the press in both Europe and the United States. His most recent books are Beauty (Oxford University Press) and Culture Counts (Encounter Books). He divides his time between rural Wiltshire and rural Virginia, in both of which places he lives with his wife and two small children.

A Fine Collection of Essays

Sadly, I doubt that anyone who is not a libertarian or conservative will endeavor to read this collection of essays. Each essay is a worthwhile read - that each is only about a dozen or so pages make this book an excellent choice for folks with small windows of time in which to read. The essays do not shy away from the link between our Western civilization and its Greek and Judeo-Christian roots. And thankfully so. To do otherwise would be to deny our foundation, which seems to be at the core of modern progressive liberalism.

In 1968, LIFE magazine sent writer Gilbert Moore and photographer Howard L. Bingham to document and tell the story of the controversial Black Panthers. The Panthers were wary of mainstream media and their Minister of Information, Eldridge Cleaver, would only allow LIFE to do the story if Bingham was the photographer. Bingham and Moore followed the Panthers for months, from Oakland to New York to Los Angeles, only to have the story pulled due to a disagreement between Moore and the magazine. Now, forty years later, these photographs and their story will finally be published.

In the interim, photographer Howard Bingham has documented some of the most compelling people and events of our time, from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Malcolm X and Robert Kennedy, and his lifelong friend Muhammad Ali.

About the Author

Howard Bingham has documented much of the history of our times with millions of still images. He authored Muhammad Ali: A Thirty Year Journey and Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight. As a photographer for Life, Look, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, People Ebony and many other international publications, Bingham has documented the most important events and peronalities of our time. He is the personal photographer to the families of Muhammad Ali and Bill Cosby.

Your library is empty without this book

Remember how you felt watching Spike Lee's adaptation of `Malcolm X'? Remember the uncanny metamorphosis of Denzel? Remember the end? The eulogy? When I was reading and looking through this book of our history I got that same feeling in my gut. No matter how brilliant the acting and production of `Malcolm X' was, it paled in comparison to the man himself. Malcolm's pictures and the unmistakable voice of the legendary (YES, legendary) Ossie Davis was the catalyst pride that swelled in each of our breast. For those of us too young to have missed the 60's and 70's and might have forgotten the stories of our mothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and pastors; this collection is priceless.

No matter your stance on the Panthers, you had better concede one thing; they changed history for Black people AND for America. Trust me; I've heard all of the "bad" stories about the Panthers. Mainly from people who don't have the first damn clue. I've also heard the good. Mainly from the people who were beaten by said clues. The Panthers were soldiers. Plain and simple. To call them anything less would be an insult, an injustice, and utterly contemptuous. They lived and fought in a violently severe time in America's history, and that history must not be forgotten or watered down. The souls that had dogs sicced on them, fire hoses that tore away at their skin, and someone else's saliva bathing their face deserve better. They demand it.

Mr. Howard L. Bingham's pictorial anthology on the Black Panthers is one of those books that need to be on every Black person's coffee table and in every Black person's library. Am I militant? Hell no. I just know my history and I'm proud of my history. Those who lived through this time will recognize these pictures, the era, and reminisce. Memories good and bad will surface. For those (like me) who grew up listening to these stories, this book is an invaluable piece of much needed history.

Now... about the pictures. Powerful. Historic. Moving. Potent. Unique. Beautiful. Dominating. The radiant pictures of Kathleen Cleaver were enough to do it for me. Next to the raised black-gloved fist, is there anything so visual stunningly powerful? So stunningly beautiful? So stunningly dangerous? Had I not known better I would have thought that SHE was the reason it was called the `Panther' party. Black. Strong. Intellectually savage. The incredibly cynical looks Bobby Seale gives the world captured on film makes you smile with a seething understanding of his thoughts. Throughout this book the power that is emanated through the lens of Mr. Bingham is glorious and vivid. Know that clich�; "a picture is worth a thousand words"? These are worth a thousand and one. By a factor of ten.

The short essays written by Howard Bingham, Gilbert Moore, Tessa Hicks, Mar Hollingsworth, Earl Ofari Hutchinson, and Bernard Kinsey are the Clubman to the perfect haircut. They said just enough without saying too much, and that is a talent in and of itself. While I can easily follow their work now because of the internet, oh how I wish I could have read/heard their words first hand. For some this will be a history book. For others; a diary. For me, it was a pleasure.

The Black Panther Party has left for generations to come examples of community based empowerment projects, anti-war activism, and a willingness to struggle with all other people (regardless of race) who believe in economic and social justice.
