An excellent grammar tutorial

I picked up this book when I realized that my grammar was not up to par as a result of attending a sorry little public school with an inadequate number of hours and instructors in the subject.

Although this book is written for the GED crowd, I found it to be an excellent tutorial on the fundamentals of grammar. It's style is very easy to read and fun with a good blend of content with practical exercises.

An Excellent Primer but the formant needs an overhaul

I am an ESL teacher and this was great book for me to review before teaching the grammar rules. The problem with using it for my students was that the format was too confusing. The author needs to go back and find a way to differentiate categories from subcategories, e.g. using Roman numerals or letters for subcategories instead of double sets of numbers. Otherwise, it's a great book, straight-forward, simply stated, and not too busy.

You'll never learn grammar from this book.

I bought this book after doing a brief review on-line and after reading the five-start comments and it turned out to be a big disappointment. It claims to be in plain English but, what it really is, is a very poorly organized book explaining grammar in a different vocabulary than what most of those who study languages know. Good luck finding rules, exceptions, etc. in this book. If you are a foreign student learning English, forget it, it will be completely useless to you. This is definetely going to be returned and replaced by a better book.

He has been the national chair of the Sustainable Facilities Practice Group of the CSI and president of Specifications Consultants in Independent Practice (SCIP). For the AIA, Mark has served as chair of the MasterSpec Review Committee, and the Specifications Professional Interest Area. For CSI, he has been president of the Boston Chapter and now serves on the national CSI Technical Committee. He has also taught a course on specifications writing at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design.

John R. Regener Jr., SAIA, CCS, CCCA, CSI, SCIP, is an architect and independent specifications writer in Irvine, California, with thirty-five years of experience in producing and applying construction contract documents for commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential projects. Active in CSI education programs and leadership, he is a national leader in SCIP.

Response to Uninformed Review

The previous reviewer obviously has not read the book that he rated so low. Harold J. Rosen is an Honorary member of The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), an honor given to few CSI members. This book, in its first edition, predates the CSI Manual of Practice, and it has been updated over several decades.

Construction Specifications Writing: Principles and Practices has been the leading textbook for teaching construction specifications at colleges and universities.

The 4th edition has been superseded by an expanded and updated 5th edition, co-authored by this reviewer, that is consistent with the CSI Manual of Practice and includes more examples and resources than CSI's MOP.

Keeping up to date and getting better

This book has a long and very fine history and tradition. Rosen was a master, but recently other masters have been used an co-authors. The book is the better for their input and is certainly a comforting teacher to all those who are new to specifications writing, or who need a resoruce to check from time to time. Simply, excellence getting better!

Classic in concept; tutorial in execution. The authors have seen fit to modify and augment the book to meet the changing world of specifications. This is a much needed, and high value book. Kudos to the authors-- high recommendation to prospective buyers and readers. Every design professional's book shelf NEEDS this book.

An understanding of Construction Specifications

I am a Intern-Architect and have little exposure to written specifications in my office. This book provides short chapters with questions at the end of each chapter. Since a lot of this reading is enough to put a person to sleep, several times over, then testing yourself with the questions at the end of the chapter and checking the answers at the end of the book help to indicate if you have a grasp of the information provided. If not, it is time to re-read the chapter. I find the book is well worth the cost if you need an understanding of Construction Specifications for the Architectural Registration Exam. Best wishes.

Is it possible to give ZERO stars? The best thing about this book is the ideal of this book-a handbook to turn mere mortals like you and me into Harvey Spector from the USA Network show SUITS. At least it's a cool idea. The second best thing about this book is its cover. There is nothing else positive about this book beyond its concept and its cover. I didn't really expect a life-changing volume but for $8.00 I did expect something more that a book probably written in under three hours and totally devoid of any wit or creativity or useful advice. I suggest that you do not purchase this book. Somebody wants to cash in on the popularity of SUITS--and that's fine with me-- but this worthless book does a great miservice to a great TV show.

In their refreshing, thoroughly documented, cogent reply to the current generally accepted interpretation of the incidence and even the existence of insanity, Torrey and Miller point out many holes in the arguments of other recent historians of the subject and don't push any single approach to schizophrenia and manic depression. Instead, they ask for a spirit of inquiry because so much about the rate of growth and the causes of mental illness remains unclear that open-minded research and clinical studies are still very much needed. Although there are a lot of statistics and graphs, as well as explication of them, in the book, there is also enough history of diagnosis and treatment in the U.S., England, Ireland, and Canada to fascinate readers whose favorite topic isn't numbers. The book delves deeply into clinical accounts and historic insane-asylum politics, funding, and social acceptance. Frequent reference to literary works and authors lightens the tone of the proceedings, as does the authors' hypothesis of a relationship between the wearing of stockings and the incidence of insanity. What are the causes of severe mental illness? Why do we continue to deny the rising numbers, and how does this denial affect our ability to help those who are afflicted?

In The Invisible Plague, E. Fuller Torrey and Judy Miller examine the records on insanity in England, Ireland, Canada, and the United States over a 250-year period, concluding, through both qualitative and quantitative evidence, that insanity is an unrecognized, modern-day plague. Their conclusion is based on demographic data, the writings of psychiatrists, and numerous literary sources. This book is a unique and major contribution to medical history. Until now, insanity, and its apparent rise over the centuries, has been interpreted as a socially and economically driven phenomenon. The present authors insist upon the biological reality of insanity and examine the reasons why epidemic insanity has been so profoundly misunderstood. The book concludes with descriptions of the possible biological causes of insanity.

By failing to understand insanity as an epidemic, we fail to appreciate its role in, for example, the Salem witch trials, the eugenics movement, and the mental hygiene movement, and its important effects on modern literature. We also fail to fully understand and address contemporary tragedies of the epidemic, such as the number of individuals with schizophrenia and manic-depressive illness who are homeless or in jails.

A Cry for Prevention

Despite the fanciful cover, this is a very serious book. It attempts to make the reader aware of how insanity is increasing since the 18th century. With the Zika virus now, we can visually see the effects of an organism on the prenatal brain. The March of Dimes has taken a leadership role in making the case for prevention. One sees the forces of financial control in the U S Congress digging in their heels. We will see what will be done about Zika.

Dr. Torrey had devoted his life to mental illness. The March of Dimes is starting to make the case for prevention.
Articles about the mentally ill are abundantly found in newspapers and magazines. We just need to find the exact mechanism that goes awry. But that too will be found. Hopefully then the March of Dimes will show its full wonderful force. We will see the forces of the U S Congress dig in, but too much has happened. We will then see a reprint of THE INVISIBLE PLAGUE. It will have a serious cover, because those of us with mental illness know we are dealing with tragic stuff.

Interesting history

This is a fascinating review of the history of mental illness for periods of time that are usually rather hard to research. I cannot speak for the accuracy since I am not a historian and I do not have the resource library to check out it's references, but it seems quite reasonable and well researched. I enjoyed the book for the thoughts it provoked and how it filled in gaps about the development of the notions of mental illness over the last several hundred years. This book has been the key to many intreguing disucssions.
