About the Author
Charles Roth is Professor Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he taught Digital Design for more than four decades. In addition to co-authoring DIGITAL SYSTEMS DESIGN USING VHDL, Dr. Roth has authored the successful FUNDAMENTALS OF LOGIC DESIGN and co-authored DIGITAL SYSTEMS DESIGN USING VERILOG.

Larry L. Kinney is a Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Minnesota. He received his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1968. His research concerns digital system and digital computer design, specifically concurrent error detection techniques, testing of logic and design, distributed computer systems, computer architectures, error detecting/correcting codes, and applications of microprocessors.

I HATE THIS BOOK!!!!!

Yay! You're going to be an engineer, congrats! Now if your professor wants you to use this textbook for homework, expect endless nights of tears and suffering because this book expects you to know what you need to know without knowing what you don't know. This book was literally a punishment for choosing the engineering field because, unless you are taught well and then use this book, it will be useless. For example, if you have an assignment with several questions from this book, and you don't understand how to do them, the book will typically make it worse and make you rethink your major choice. I hate my professor for making me utilize this book and I feel like this should not be a text book, it should be more like a reference for you after you get your degree.

I feel I'm dumb when I read it...

...then I google the subject and read/watch something much easier to understand. Unfortunately, this is a required textbook for my Modern Digital Systems Design class, but I find it really hard to follow the sentences and the paragraphs. I thought the fault was on me, but I remember enjoying very much reading through Linear Algebra, Calculus, and Differential Equations textbooks. This textbook, however, is painstakingly difficult to read - event though some stuff is pretty straighforward to understand, as I said before, once when you look it up on other sources.

About the Author
Born in 1950, TIM DLUGOS was involved in the Mass Transit poetry scene in Washington, D.C., and later, in New York City, in the downtown literary scene. His books include Entre Nous, Strong Place, and Powerless. Dlugos died of AIDS at the age of forty. DAVID TRINIDAD's most recent collection of poetry is the The Late Show. He teaches at Columbia College in Chicago.

Extraordinary Accomplishment

Tim Dlugos died of AIDS in 1990 at age 40. People who knew his work back then realized that he was an impressively talented poet. But it was not until his friend David Trinidad put together this magnum opus of Dlugos's work that the extent of his accomplishment could be seen in full. The result of years of research and editing, this book makes clear that, despite his early death, Tim Dlugos deserves recognition as a major voice in 20th century American poetry.

The major AIDS poet writes in plain language about his life in NYC, describing "the tangled postures lovers learn"

In March 2015 for National Poetry Month, the book discussion group at The LGBT Center in NYC read poetry by Tim Dlugos from "A Fast Life: The Collected Poems of Tim Dlugos." Despite the horrible snowstorm, we had a terrific turnout, including one member who actually knew Dlugos, and some absolutely enlightening and inspiring discussion. (This is why we discuss books and poetry.)

I sometimes have a difficult time reading poetry. This book was huge ("a real door-stopper," somebody called it) so I originally chose a dozen poems to try to focus the reading to a reasonable length, which may have been helpful but also biased the reading toward his later more depressing poems. Many of the early poems are lighter (some of them very light) and don't really point toward the serious tone his writing takes near the end of his life. The poems I originally selected:
SHELLEY WINTERS (a pop culture poem recalling Frank O'Hara)
POEM AFTER DINNER (an occasional poem)
GILLIGAN'S ISLAND (pop culture and commentary)
JE SUIS EIN AMERICANO (humor)
CLUBS I'VE JOINED (a very smart list poem)
AT THE POINT (memoir)
SONNET ("The night he leaves you," more about NYC)
DESIRE UNDER THE PINES (on Fire Island)
SODOM (on The Mineshaft)
SPY OF LOVE (another well-controlled sonnet)
CHRISTOPHER ISHERWOOD (haiku-like brevity and clarity)
THE STEVEN HAMILTON SESTINA (a masterwork of style and meaning)
SLEEP LIKE SPOONS (such a touching ending, such terrific language)
POWERLESS (a major poem and the title of one of his collections)
G-9 (the great AIDS poem made up of short lines holding on for life)
IT USED TO BE MORE FUN (on being mortal and a poet)
RADIANT BABY (on Keith Haring)
D.O.A. (a final poem)

Dlugos's life and work cannot be separated. He was a Catholic monk who left the monastery at the age of 21 in 1971 to become an activist for political and gay causes. He originally moved to Washington, DC, before he moved to NYC. In both cities, he made friends with a number of the leading gay poets and authors of the period including Michael Lally, Joe Brainard, Brad Gooch, Eileen Myles, and Dennis Cooper, among many others whom he identifies in his poems. He was a denizen of the newly liberated gay world found in NYC during the late 1970's before he eventually sobered up and enrolled in the Yale Divinity School, where he hoped to become an Episcopal priest. He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1989 and died in 1990 at the age of 40.

Dlugos is widely known for the poems he wrote while living with HIV and AIDS and is considered the seminal poet of the AIDS epidemic. His long narrative poem "G-9" (which was the name of the AIDS ward at Roosevelt Hospital) is considered one of his major accomplishments.

The critic Marjorie Perloff wrote, “This is poetry of extraordinary speed and energy that fuses fact and fantasy, dream and documentary. Tim Dlugos’ every nerve seems to vibrate.”

Much of his early poetry does seem very fast. The comparison to Frank O'Hara is inevitable (think "The Lunch Poems"). Much of his writing, if not almost all of it, is personal and autobiographical. He's full of pop culture references, and a number of attendees enjoyed reading about NYC in the 1970's and looking for the references: clones, Christopher Street, Danny's Potbelly restaurant, the Ninth Circle hustler bar, streets and addresses, music and bars, and churches and clubs. Many of these references already need footnotes and future readers will depend on quickly disappearing information that may completely slip away any day now.

His language is very common and most of his writing is about everyday events: I had lunch with this guy, I slept with that guy, I thought about another guy, I'm watching TV and going to the movies now, then then going dancing. The complaint is that he doesn't elevate language or his daily occurrences to the level of "great" poetry. He's a regular guy with a specific cadence and consistent point of view, and the poetry often seems uninspired and uninspiring. While modern poetry is written in everyday speech, Dlugos has the ability to show his skill with the use of formal poetic forms.

His most serious free-verse poem, as noted above. is "G-9." It's long and discursive. But two of his other great poems, which we discovered from readers at the meeting, may be able to give you a feeling for his writing. If you don't read anything else, you might want to read these. For the THE STEVEN HAMILTON SESTINA, look at the ending words of the lines in each of the stanzas and then how all the words get used in two lines at the end. For SLEEP LIKE SPOONS, pay attention to the biblical references and the beautiful imagery.

About the Author
W. Lawrence Neuman James is professor of sociology and Asian Studies coordinator at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His M.A. and Ph.D. were earned at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.� He has authored seven books and published 35 articles and book chapters, which have appeared in Social Problems, Sociological Inquiry, Social Science Quarterly, American Sociological Review, Critical Asian Studies, Teaching Sociology, The Journal of Contemporary Asia,� Sociological Quarterly, and other journals . He is a former president of the Wisconsin Sociological Association. Neuman has received his university’s highest award for research, the Chancellor's Award for service to students with disabilities, as well as the the Wisconsin Sociological Association's Outstanding Service Award, and the College of Letters and Sciences awards for outstanding teaching, excellence in research, and outstanding service.

Most pragmatic and informative book for undergraduate research methods in sociology

Neuman aims for two goals: (1) help readers understand how social scientists do research and (2) to help the reader conduct his or her own studies. It is this second goal where this book stands out as especially successful compared to commonly used texts in sociology methods courses. The book can be used as an introduction and as a resource for how to get started on a research project. It is worth keeping rather than reselling for any student who plans to use their methodological training in the future, especially those aiming for graduate studies.

The preface of the book outlines how this version differs from previous editions. In short, he integrated more directly relevant examples, rewrote some of the chapters, and altered the voice to make it speak more directly about what researchers actually do. These strengthen the core contribution of the book, which is to help students cultivate the ability to actually do research. These improvements are more important than simply plugging in new figures or adding an extra chapter, which might be more obvious to the casual reader. However, the earlier version is good too, so thrifty students can probably satisfice by using the 6th edition.

Very good quality book

Very good quality book. I had an e-book version with a two-year access only (I took the class back in 2012) but I still use it on occasion as a reference book on all things research-related. When my access lapsed I decided to invest in a hard copy version. It arrived a bit early, brand new or incredibly mint condition, no complaints at all.

Simply a great resource and reference

The author brilliantly lays out the history and framework of social research. Multiple dimensions of social research methods are covered in this text, primarily the methodology behind qualitative and quantitative approaches. Also covered are topics on data measurement, theory, sampling, the literature review, and research report writing. Understanding and making sense of the material is made easier if the reader has statistical knowledge. This book is a spectacular resource and will be staying on my shelf for future reference even when I am out of graduate school (Masters in Public Administration student).

A great collection of classic articles

The price tells all, that is Wyckoff's advice for the market and that's my advice for this purchase of this book. A book, for the cost, must give you ideas that surpass the dollar value. There are so many timeless tidbits of advice that can pay for this book 100x. For the small investment in money and since the book isn't very long, your time, this book is a treasure. It's always nice to read books from way back because you realize that nothing really has changed in trading and that is a good thing. Learn the basics from one of the best, Richard Wyckoff.

Wow! This book saved my sanity!

I don't typically leave reviews, so here goes:

For 10 months I have been having an allergic reaction to something...??? My doctor could not figure out what. I did the whole steroid thing, then, a Chinese Herbalist, which did help some. But, I still could not find what I was allergic to. I was going to go to an allergist but they said that it may or may not find the allergy that I'm allergic to. My quote was $300 for the first office visit and $1200 for the allergy test. If they felt certain that they would find the allergy it would be worth that amount of money to me. The allergy was causing a horible rash around my mouth and eyes. Well, in desperation, trying to learn about muscle testing I happened upon this book on Amazon.

I received the book and finished reading it the first day. I normally read a book like this maybe one chapter a day or week... I do enjoy learning about how our bodies work. However, with this book I knew that I had finally found the answer to my allergy search.

I learned what allergy I had, why my body had developed the allergy and the appropriate antedote to correct the allergy. Within the first day I noticed a difference. Within 3 days I was a different person. I am feeling much better and am on my way to recovery. I know this won't be a "miracle cure." But, at least now, I have hope to be well again. I cannot tell you how much this book has affected my life. If you are fighting an unknown allergy then take the time to read this book. If I had not had an allergy I would still find this book VERY interesting.

He goes into great depth about common ailments (high blood pressure, arthritis, infertility, gout, anemia, toxemia, obesity, etc.) and how to correct them. The book's subjects are a little broken up, but I simply got a highlighter with stickies and marked the pages that applied to me. This can be a little frustrating, but the benefits FAR outweigh the lack of subject organization.

There are detailed hand-drawn pictures of how to do muscle testing. For the most part, they were very easy to follow. He describes how to muscle test for allergies, lack of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. He also tells you how to pick out the right supplement for you (no allergic reaction.) He decribes how to get the vitamins, minerals and amino acids out of food sources, herbs, vitamins & homeopothy. He also covers gems, etc. I personally skipped that chapter, but the other stuff was incredible.

I have recommended this book to several people already! I hope you find it as incredible as I have.

Update on 2/8/2012: After 1 1/2 years of using this book I am still referring to it. I have since decided to take a professional herbalism course. I am able to use some of the information from this book to add to my course books; for instance: if I have a headache behind my right eye I can juice a carrot and celery and my headache will go away. I promise this works better than Ibuprofen. You must try it to believe it. I wouldn't have believed it prior to being in such bad physical shape. I am now a believer. And, I am not a tree-hugger or totally crunchy or the granola type. I promise.

Also, for those that have made comments about how does Muscle Testing work: We home school. During science one day we were watching Aurora Lipper's video science (she was truly a NASA rocket scientist) was explaining that everything has a positive and negative energy. She had a glass of water in her hand. She said "Even this glass of water has a positive and negative energy. There is a push and a pull to our bodies that we don't even recognize." I exclaimed "That is the best description I have heard to explain how muscle testing works." Our bodies recognize the energy - even though we are not even aware that they are.

Great to Have in Your Health Arsenal

For those who wish to take more responsibility for their own health & family's health, this is a helpful resource to have on hand.
Harkens back to a time when common ailments were treated at home with herbs and other foods. The outcome always seemed better in the long run. Also, was fascinated by some interesting signs of deficiencies, e.g., when corners of the mouth have a downturn you have a deficiency of potassium (on the right side) or of sodium (on the left side.) Thought I was just aging badly. Now, I supplement to build that up in my system.
There are other diagnostic tools that seem be out there. But, I had formerly gone thru the tests and they are helpful; the body does speak!

Where has this book BEEN all these years???

O.K. What I absolutely feel compelled to share with you is this: RUN (don't walk!) to the closest website or bookstore and buy yourself a copy of "The Ultimate Healing System" by Donald Lepore, N.D. I am only 50 pages into this book and am COMPLETELY floored with the AMAZING amount and quality of information on healing all kinds of allergies and dis-eases with minerals, amino acids, and vitamins. He provides you with complete instructions on Advanced Muscle Testing, what symptoms wouldlook like in deficiency state, what the vit. or mineral does in the body, what anti-aging properties it may have,what fat dissolving properties it has,
what co-factor nutrients are required to get the best results, what exposures or conditions will deplete the nutrient, etc. etc. And that is just the beginning of a 392 page book on health issues and nutrition!
Heck, I had never even HEARD of Vitamin T before, but he says it will help anemia, hemophilia and improve a fading memory! And I already took several nutrition courses and his info. is WAAAAAY beyond their levels!!!

Yes, I used to think that Muscle Test Reponse was a "twilight zone" method of diagnosing deficiencies, until I discovered it worked wonderfully for self-diagnosis. Dr. Lepore makes it easy to figure out
what deficiencies you are up against and how to fix them!

Honestly, for the cheap price it costs, this book is my No. 1 favorite book on Nutrition I have ever run across. Thank God for Trinity College of Natural Health and their Certified Nutritional Counseling coursework! Now, after all these years, I'm FINALLY getting answers to some of the most thorny health problems I and loved ones have faced. :-) At last, Dr. Lepore, you have introduced me to the power to heal on the deepest level!
