Great resource for saving lost data

This is a great handbook for recovering data from hard drives. The step by step instructions and screenshots make it easy to use the techniques in this book. The book covers multiple tools for data recovery which is nice since no one tool is going to work every time, plus it allows you to start with simpler, faster tools before trying advanced techniques if necessary. Most of the tools covered are free as well.

The books covers both recoving deleted data as well as repairing damaged partitions (NOW I know I could have recovered that RAW partition...) The chapter on analyzing hard drive SMART data is nice too since I can use that now to check the health of the hard drive and hopefully catch problems before I need the other techniques in this book to recover lost data.

The chapter covering basic hard drive operation was interesting to me (as a computer engineer) because I like to understand how computers work at the lowest level, and this filled in details for me that I didn't know.

There is also a final appendix on how to set up a hard drive image so that you can test out these tools on the image without risking damaging any real data.

Overall this is a good resource on to have on hand for providing a walk-thru of multiple data recovery methods for either yourself, friends, or clients.

Saved my aspirations

I had a crucial secondary drive go south on my main development machine. I had backups of critical files, but there were a lot of "non-critical" files that I soon learned I REALLY wanted back. I've recovered data from bad drives before, but this one was a puzzler. It seemed to be physically fine (ran, sounded normal), but would not mount in Windows 7 or in Linux, even after MBR repair. This book guided me through a number of new things to try. The tool that finally saved the day was TestDisk, which could find and view all my folders and files without actually mounting the drive. It then allowed me to copy ALL my files to another drive.

I used the Kindle edition of this book, which allowed me to start instantly and the Kindle format was just fine for my purposes.

So again, the combination of this book and the tools it describes (especially TestDisk) was exactly what I needed. Thanks to the author and the creator of TestDisk.

Not aimed at teaching data recovery, it's a simpletons guide to data recovery.

Extremely easy and short read.

This would be a good resource if you have no clue how to recover data, and need help.

It's not appropriate for students or anyone looking to learn professional data recovery. In typical ebook style, there's about 2000 words spread over 120 pages. Very low information density. Only basic, free, non-invasive techniques are covered. Basically really obvious stuff you would understand from browsing google a bit..

Good Introduction to the Practice!

I'm taking a undergraduate course in Clinical Interview & Counseling as I prepare for my future studies in Clinical Psychology and practice and this was our textbook.
It doesn't focus on a method of therapy (cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalytic, etc), rather it examines techniques for listening to clients, talking and developing client-therapist relationships, preparing intake reports, conducting suicide assessments interviews, dealing with resistant clients, understanding diverse/multicultural patients and other dynamics of working in a clinical setting.
The DVD was incredibly helpful in that it showed examples of all the techniques discussed and sometimes was an easy way to concisely explain a large chapter.
It is a big book with a lot of information, so it's not a quick or easy read, but it can be very helpful in getting a broad introduction to the practice of clinical interviewing and is helpful.

Invaluable text book for counseling students

It is rare to find a text book that is not a chore to read, but this is one of them! The authors write in a very engaging manner, and the frequent bursts of humor make reading it a real pleasure. It takes readers through all the steps of interviewing, at a perfect pace, so that readers are not overwhelmed with information, but are able to absorb it, and develop their skills gradually. It also discusses in depth how to work with particular populations, including young clients, culturally diverse clients, and couples. The skills and techniques are discussed in a way that is is easy for readers to grasp and apply to their work. I would highly recommend this book for all students in the helping professions field. It is the most useful book I read during graduate school and I will always refer back to it throughout my career.

Great Reference Book

This is another book in which I used for my Master's; it is very detailed and must have if you are considering entering the "helping profession." It goes into valuable skills for interviewing. My path did not lead to becoming a clinical psychologist, but the material in which I was required to read trained me from that prospective, as the interview, if done properly will be most helpful in establishing rapport. The book discusses items, such as Theoritical Orientations, as this becomes most important as different schools of thought will approach the same issue but only from their prospective,i.e, Cognitive Behavior Therapy vs. Transactional Psychology. Consequently, if say for instance, you the intervier were called before a panel and explained why you approached an issue a certain way. It would be related to your school of training. I hope this makes sense. It will be a valuable reference in the field of Sociology and /or Psychology for sure!!!

Yet the fault lies not with them, rather in the fact that there has been precious little documentation in South Africa of who played what, or who recorded what, with whom, and when. This is true of all music-making in this country, though it is most striking in the musics of the black communities. Beyond Memory: Recording the History, Moments and Memories of South African Music is an invaluable publication because it offers a first-hand account of the South African music scene of the past decades from the pen of a man, Max Thamagana Mojapelo, who was situated in the very thick of things, thanks to his job as a deejay at the South African Broadcasting Corporation. This book - astonishing for the breadth of its coverage - is based on his diaries, on interviews he conducted and on numerous other sources, and we find in it not only the well-known names of recent South African music but a countless host of others whose contribution must be recorded if we and future generations are to gain an accurate picture of South African music history of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

About the Author

Xuede Qian is currently a statewide Geotechnical Engineering Specialist with the Waste Management Division, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in hydraulic and geotechnical engineering from Hohai University Nanjing, China, and the Ph.D. degree in geotechnical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is also an adjunct faculty member with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Michigan, with responsibility for teaching a senior/graduate level course on landfill design and construction. He has been actively involved in landfill engineering research and has participated in many landfill design, construction, and remediation projects during the past decade. Dr. Qian has authored numerous technical papers in the geotechnical and geoenvironmental fields. His professional experiences include work for universities, regulatory agencies, and consulting firms.

Robert M. Koerner is currently an H. L. Bowman Professor of Civil Engineering with Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from Drexel University and the Ph.D. degree in geotechnical engineering from Duke University. He is an Honorary Member of the ASCE and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Koerner is the co-author of the first book on geotextiles and has authored or coauthored more than 300 papers on geosynthetics in major engineering journals and for national and international conference proceedings. His latest effort is the fourth edition of the textbook entitled Designing with Geosynthetics. As Director of the Geosynthetic Research Institute, his activities involve all aspects of waste disposal, but focus particularly on the liner and cover containment systems.

Donald H. Gray is a Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees and the Ph.D. degree in geological and civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. His areas of expertise include slope stability and erosion control, engineering properties of solid waste materials, the transport of leachate through landfill liners (under combined advection/diffusion), and containment strategies for landfilled wastes. He has authored numerous technical papers and lectured extensively at training workshops and short courses dealing with geotechnical aspects of waste disposal in the ground. He has served as the organizer and chairman of two ASCE specialty conferences on geotechnical engineering of land disposal. Dr. Gray is also the principal author of two well-regarded reference books on biotechnical and soil bioengineering slope stabilization.

Preface

The United States produces about 300 million tons of solid waste per year. Up to 75 percent of the solid waste continues to be landfilled—in spite of vigorous efforts aimed at waste reduction, recycling, and re-use. A modern, well-constructed landfill can be characterized as an engineered structure that consists primarily of a composite liner, leachate collection and removal system, gas collection and control system, and final cover. A landfill also behaves as a giant in-situ bioreactor whose contents undergo complex biochemical reactions. The production of landfill gas is a major byproduct of waste decomposition processes. The adoption of suitable design and construction methods is essential not only to reduce design and construction costs, but also to minimize long term operation, maintenance, and monitoring expenses.

Geotechnical Aspects of Landfill Design and Construction addresses landfill siting, design, and construction issues in a comprehensive manner. The characteristics of landfill containment envelopes and their design/construction are treated in detail. The attributes and advantages of composite liners relative to conventional compacted clay liners are examined carefully. The book discusses both the material properties and engineering design of geosynthetic components (e.g., geomembranes, geotextiles, geocomposites, and geosynthetic clay liners) that are used in modern landfill construction. Methods of estimating landfill leachate quantities and gas generation in addition to the design of leachate and gas collection systems are also described in detail. We include other important topics as well—such as vertical expansion and bioreactor concepts—that are ways of increasing capacity at existing landfills.

Several chapters in the book are devoted to the measurement and determination of landfill performance. These performance considerations include settlement estimates, mass stability, liner leakage rates (by both hydraulic convection and chemical diffusion), envelope durability, leachate and gas collection, and drainage efficiency. Final cover design to limit rainfall infiltration, frost problems, and erosion is addressed as well.

Geotechnical Aspects of Landfill Design and Construction focuses on actual design and construction procedures, as opposed to a discussion of solid waste management issues and to general descriptions and/or conceptual designs. We present the reader with a complete, integrated package of analytical tools, design equations, and construction procedures for all elements of a landfill. The purpose of the book is to show the reader how to design and construct a real landfill step by step. To this end, we provide in the book not only design equations, but also specific guidelines and procedures, and calculation examples for constructing various elements of a modern landfill.

Since landfill design and construction in the United States uses English Computational units almost exclusively (and there is no end in sight of this practice), we have complied by using these units as primary. Worldwide, however, SI units are the norm and we have accompanied the U.S. units with SI computational units in parentheses. The conversion to SI units is "soft." The notable exception to this is hydraulic conductivity where we have used in the traditional metric unit of "cm/sec."

Geotechnical Aspects of Landfill Design and Construction is intended as (i) a reference book for practicing professionals, (ii) an agency training manual, and (iii) university textbook. A draft manuscript of the book has been used and tested by the principal author in a geoenvironmental graduate course at the University of Michigan since 1995. Carefully selected design examples, diagrams, and tables are incorporated into the book. These give the reader a better sense of the necessary site investigation, planning, analysis, and organization that go into a landfill design and construction project. In addition to worked design examples we have also included homework problems and an extensive reference list at the end of every chapter.

About the Author
David Annandale is the author of the Yarrick series, consisting of the novella Chains of Golgotha and the novel Imperial Creed, as well as the Horus Heresy novel The Damnation of Pythos. For the Space Marine Battles series he has written The Death of Antagonis and Overfiend. He is a prolific writer of short fiction, including the novella Mephiston: Lord of Death and numerous short stories set in the Horus Heresy and Warhammer 40,000 universes. David lectures at a Canadian university, on subjects ranging from English literature to horror films and video games.
John French has written several Horus Heresy stories including the novellas Tallarn: Executioner and The Crimson Fist, and the audio dramas Templar and Warmaster. He is the author of the Ahriman series, which includes the novels Ahriman: Exile and Ahriman: Sorcerer, plus the short story ‘Hand of Dust’: Additionally for the Warhammer 40,000 universe he has written the Space Marine Battles novella Fateweaver, plus a number of short stories. He lives and works in Nottingham, UK.
