Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, by J.K. Rowling

For twelve long years, the dread fortress of Azkaban held an infamous prisoner named Sirius Black. Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort.

Now he has escaped, leaving only two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter's defeat of You-Know-Who was Black's downfall as well. And the Azkban guards heard Black muttering in his sleep, "He's at Hogwarts...he's at Hogwarts."

Harry Potter isn't safe, not even within the walls of his magical school, surrounded by his friends. Because on top of it all, there may well be a traitor in their midst.

Amazon.com Review
For most children, summer vacation is something to look forward to. But not for our 13-year-old hero, who's forced to spend his summers with an aunt, uncle, and cousin who detest him. The third book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series catapults into action when the young wizard "accidentally" causes the Dursleys' dreadful visitor Aunt Marge to inflate like a monstrous balloon and drift up to the ceiling. Fearing punishment from Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon (and from officials at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who strictly forbid students to cast spells in the nonmagic world of Muggles), Harry lunges out into the darkness with his heavy trunk and his owl Hedwig.

As it turns out, Harry isn't punished at all for his errant wizardry. Instead he is mysteriously rescued from his Muggle neighborhood and whisked off in a triple-decker, violently purple bus to spend the remaining weeks of summer in a friendly inn called the Leaky Cauldron. What Harry has to face as he begins his third year at Hogwarts explains why the officials let him off easily. It seems that Sirius Black--an escaped convict from the prison of Azkaban--is on the loose. Not only that, but he's after Harry Potter. But why? And why do the Dementors, the guards hired to protect him, chill Harry's very heart when others are unaffected? Once again, Rowling has created a mystery that will have children and adults cheering, not to mention standing in line for her next book. Fortunately, there are four more in the works. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
In this third installment in the projected seven-volume series, Sirius Black, imprisoned for killing 13 people with one curse, escapes from Azkaban. As he heads for Hogwarts, the chilling Dementors who trail him quickly descend upon the school. "Each successive volume expands upon its predecessor with dizzyingly well-planned plots and inventive surprises," said PW in a Best Books of 2001 citation. Ages 8-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-Isn't it reassuring that some things just get better and better? Harry is back and in fine form in the third installment of his adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His summer with the hideous Dursley family is cut short when, during a fit of quite understandable rage, he turns his Aunt Marge into an enormous balloon and then runs away. Soon, it becomes quite apparent that someone is trying to kill him; even after Harry is ensconed in the safety of fall term at Hogwarts, the attacks continue. Myriad subplots involving a new teacher with a secret, Hermione's strangely heavy class schedule, and enmity between Ron's old rat, Scabbers, and Hermione's new cat, Crookshanks, all mesh to create a stunning climax. The pace is nonstop, with thrilling games of Quidditch, terrifying Omens of Death, some skillful time travel, and lots of slimy Slytherins sneaking about causing trouble. This is a fabulously entertaining read that will have Harry Potter fans cheering for more.

About to fall apart
By hailey
I am very upset with the turn out of this book. When I read it i'm going to be afraid that it's going to fall apart because it already is. For something this worn down I would have rather paid half of what I did.

A Breath of High-Octane Oxygen!
By Amazon Customer
Who’d have thought that two warring neighbors in an upscale neighborhood (Malibu, CA) could escalate their squabbles to an epic level? I spent a lot of time wondering "Blimey, could this work in everyday life?"

Hey folks, here’s my tuppenceworth. Two memorable characters: One good, a sophisticated lawyer, but still a “babe in the woods” compared to the other, a crafty son-of-a-gun, more cunning than the Horned One himself, and this bloke, well, he wears his charisma thick on his sleeve. So I’m thinking, have we finally entered the age of the thinking thriller? If one discounts the purple prose pouring unctuously from Machiavelli’s lips (which incidentally fits this impostor’s persona to a T), it’s a bloody brilliant novel—a novel exploiting a novel concept! The plot builds momentum like an opus. If you must know, by the time it reached its crescendo towards chapter 35 or so, I was on my feet cheering, ready with a standing ovation and a bottle of Michelob in my right hand—cf. last chapter. All right, I’m a bit of a cat lover, too, but still!

I’ve got to warn you, though, or you'll find yourself sneaking moments out of your busy day to decrypt the meaning of life using Machiavelli’s clever word acrobatics, which goes by a fancy French name for voodoo-something-or-other, but is nonetheless an eminently patentable formula if you ask me! In fact, I think I've just glimpsed the writing on the wall, and if I’m not deluded it reads: CHASE’S BOOK GARNERS PLAUDITS ON GLOBAL SCALE!

For a jaded bloke like myself, reading Know Thy Neighbor was like a breath of high octane oxygen after spending hours in a cigar smoke-filled room.

Spoilers!
By Kati
“I solemnly sear that I am up to no good.” (ch. 10 pg. 192)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book in the Harry Potter series. It follows Harry and his friends through the excitement that is their third year at Hogwarts. In the start of the book, we find Harry doing his homework by flashlight under his bed sheets- as any proof of his time at that wizarding school is forbidden by the Drusley’s. It’s Harry’s birthday and for the first time in his life, he receives birthday cards and presents from his friends Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid. During a visit from Aunt Marge, Vernon and Harry make a deal, if he can keep Hogwarts a secret, Vernon will sign Harry’s permission slip to visit Hogsmead on the weekends. Unfortunately that goes out the window when Marge insults Harry’s family and he accidentally inflates her, whoops. The Knight Bus then picks up Harry after he leaves the house suddenly, but not after seeing something peculiar in the bushes…
The main conflict of this novel is the fact that escaped prisoner Sirius Black is on the loose and dangerous. Dementors have made Hogwarts their home for the year and even made a little pit stop on the Hogwarts Express to make sure Sirius Black wasn’t aboard. While they didn’t find the prisoner on the train, they did find Harry, because of the sorrow and death he has already witnessed the dementors were drawn to him. The mysterious person (who we find out to be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher) is at the ready to produce a Patronus charm, which is used to ward of dementors with a happy memory.
The school year starts and the dementors are not respecting the boundaries that Dumbledore has put into place. They even disrupt a Quidditch match and send Harry flying off of his broom and his Nimbus 2000 into the Whomping Willow. Harry get used to his new classes and the frequent disappearance and reappearance of Hermione as she seems to be taking more class than any average witch or wizard can handle. Third year is when students start taking Divination and it’s not Harry’s favorite subject to say the least. Professor Trelawney often tells Harry he is in grave danger after finding the Grim in his cup, and she becomes overcome with a prophecy when they are alone in the classroom. "It will happen tonight. The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight, the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant's aid, greater and more terrible than ever before. Tonight... before midnight... the servant... will set out... to rejoin... his master..." (ch.16 pg.324)
The story concludes with Harry, Ron and Hermione using Hermione’s Time Turner to not only save Hagrid’s friend Buckbeak, but also Harry’s innocent godfather Sirius Black, who has spent the last 12 years in Azkaban for a crime he did not commit. With the help of their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher (who is also a werewolf!) Remus Lupin; Harry finds out more about his parents past and how their secret keeper and friend Peter Pettigrew betrayed them.
This is easily my favorite Harry Potter book out of the seven. I’d give it ten out of five stars if I could. It introduced me to my favorite character of the series (Remus Lupin) and helped to continue the story of Harry Potter and helped Harry find out more about his parents before they died. He also was reconnected with his godfather and James’ best friend Sirius Black.

The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey (Princeton Science Library), by Spencer Wells

Around 200,000 years ago, a man--identical to us in all important respects--lived in Africa. Every person alive today is descended from him. How did this real-life Adam wind up father of us all? What happened to the descendants of other men who lived at the same time? And why, if modern humans share a single prehistoric ancestor, do we come in so many sizes, shapes, and races?

Showing how the secrets about our ancestors are hidden in our genetic code, Spencer Wells reveals how developments in the cutting-edge science of population genetics have made it possible to create a family tree for the whole of humanity. We now know not only where our ancestors lived but who they fought, loved, and influenced.

Informed by this new science, The Journey of Man is replete with astonishing information. Wells tells us that we can trace our origins back to a single Adam and Eve, but that Eve came first by some 80,000 years. We hear how the male Y-chromosome has been used to trace the spread of humanity from Africa into Eurasia, why differing racial types emerged when mountain ranges split population groups, and that the San Bushmen of the Kalahari have some of the oldest genetic markers in the world. We learn, finally with absolute certainty, that Neanderthals are not our ancestors and that the entire genetic diversity of Native Americans can be accounted for by just ten individuals.

It is an enthralling, epic tour through the history and development of early humankind--as well as an accessible look at the analysis of human genetics that is giving us definitive answers to questions we have asked for centuries, questions now more compelling than ever.

Amazon.com Review
Spencer Wells traces human evolution back to our very first ancestor in The Journey of Man. Along the way, he sums up the explosive effect of new techniques in genetics on the field of evolutionary biology and all available evidence from the fossil record. Wells's seemingly sexist title is purposeful: he argues that the Y chromosome gives us a unique opportunity to follow our migratory heritage back to a sort of Adam, just as earlier work in mitochondrial DNA allowed the identification of Eve, mother of all Homo sapiens. While his descriptions of the advances made by such luminary scientists as Richard Lewontin and Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza can be dry, Wells comes through with sparkling metaphors when it counts, as when he compares genetic drift to a bouillabaisse recipe handed down through a village's generations. Though finding our primal male is an exciting prospect, the real revolution Wells describes is racial. Or rather, nonracial, as he reiterates the scientific truth that our notions of what makes us different from each other are purely cultural, not based in biology. The case for an "out of Africa" scenario of human migration is solid in this book, though Wells makes it clear when he is hypothesizing anything controversial. Readers interested in a fairly technical, but not overwhelming, summary of the remarkable conclusions of 21st-century human evolutionary biology will find The Journey of Man a perfect primer. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
In this surprisingly accessible book, British geneticist Wells sets out to answer long-standing anthropological questions of where humans came from, how we migrated and when we arrived in such places as Europe and North America. To trace the migration of human beings from our earliest homes in Africa to the farthest reaches of the globe, Wells calls on recent DNA research for support. Clues in the blood of present groups such as eastern Russia's Chukchi, as well as the biological remnants of long-extinct human clans, allow Wells to follow the Y chromosome as a relatively unaltered marker of human heritage. Eventually, working backward through time, he finds that the earliest common "ingredient" in males' genetic soup was found in a man Wells calls the "Eurasian Adam," who lived in Africa between 31,000 and 79,000 years ago. Each subsequent population, isolated from its fellows, gained new genetic markers, creating a map in time and space. Wells writes that the first modern humans "left Africa only 2,000 generations ago" and quickly fanned out across Asia, into Europe, and across the then-extant land bridge into the Americas. Using the same markers, he debunks the notion that Neanderthals were our ancestors, finds odd links between faraway peoples, and-most startlingly-discovers that all Native Americans can be traced to a group of perhaps a dozen people. By explaining his terminology and methods throughout the book, instead of in a chunk, Wells makes following the branches of the human tree seem easy. 44 color photos, 54 halftones and 3 maps.

Review
"The Journey of Man is a book that should be read, for undeniably the story Wells reveals will transform our understanding of ourselves."--Tim Flannery, New York Review of Books

"Spencer Wells chronicles the history of genetic population studies, starting with Darwin's puzzlement over the diversity of humanity he saw first-hand from the deck of the Beagle, and ending with the various attempts to classify human variation on the basis of different political and social agendas."--Rebecca Cann, Nature

"The Journey of Man is fascinating and oozes charm. . . . [It] is packed with important insights into our history and our relationships with each other. . . . Who needs literature when science is this much fun?"--Chris Lavers, Guardian

"The Journey of Man is the best account available of the story of human origins and dispersals."--Colin Renfrew, Times Higher Education Supplement

"Fortunately for the lay reader, Wells has a knack for clear descriptions and clever analogies to help explain the intricacies of the science involved. Both entertaining and enlightening."--Library Journal

"Wells does an excellent job of making complex scientific data accessible and weaves a tapestry of physical anthropology and archaeology as well as linguistics and, of course, genetics to piece together the rise of the agricultural society, the interrelations between far-flung languages, and the eventual settlement of humans into virtually every corner of the globe."--Elise Proulx, East Bay Express

Great history of modern humans
By William Divale, Ph.D.
Great book and very well written. I am a professional cultural anthropologist who just retired after 42 years of teaching. I had not paid much attention to the new work on genetics done in physical anthropology. This new research changes our picture of modern human origins completely. Spencer Wells does a great job of bringing the findings of several disciplines together to make a very strong argument. We all come from Africa - that is well known - but all modern humans stem from the same African woman who lived 150,000 years ago. Our spread through-out the planet out of Africa began only 60,000 years ago. He shows that by following the coastal route out of Africa our human ancestors could move rapidly across the planet. The old view is that we evolved from Homo Erectus and then Neanderthal man, but it appears that we just wiped them out, although there was some interbreeding. If you find this review hard to believe, then read the book.

A Wonderful Clarification for Those Who Really Want to Know The Basics of Human Proliferation Throughut Planet Earth !
By Bernard Z. Friedlander
This book is excellent in its field, and it would have gained its fifth star if the scientific foundations of genetics and genetic variability had been explained with a few more concessions to educated general readers who need help with the technical intricacies of genetic variation.
Except for that minor warning, Spencer Wells has done a very great service to those of us who seek a clearer understanding of the details of how our species came to occupy all of Earth, after our very high-risk emergence from Eastern Africa about 60,000 years ago.
The importance Wells attributes to Darwinian thinking about the application to homo sapiens of variability and selection to our emergence and proliferation is profound. Two key points stand out with great clarity: the very small populations of homo sapiens that survived the hazards that their varied groups encountered, before the development of agriculture, and the very high mortality that prevailed among those groups which faced the hazards of their journeys.
It seems ironic now, when our human expansion and "conquest" of Earth raises serious doubts about our species' capacity to continue to survive, that there was so long a period when it seems remarkable that homo sapiens survived at all.
Bernard Z. Friedlander, PhD, Madison, WI

Pretty good story of Humanity
By mark seligman
This book is an interesting but not gripping recounting of the biology and ancestry of human beings as traced primarily through the Y chromosone that identifies paternal lineage. It is probably worth 3.5 stars, but I think that the rating system tends to overexpress the views of people who love a book and the people who hate it resulting in few mid range reviews.
The technical aspects of DNA analysis are presented in an easily understandable manner. One does not need a PhD in biology to get this book.
The story is told straigthforwardly maybe too straightforward; for instance a friend had his DNA run to discover a significant contribution of African genes mixed in with his Irish ones. It turns out that during the 8th century the Vikings actually brought Africans to Ireland. This book seems to gloss over some of these events in order to keep the story clearer. I suspect that some controversies in the field are muted a bit; every scientific field has controversies.
The story of Kennebec man seems a little out of date, and that did make me wonder if there were other things that might need some updates.

Best Henry Kuttner Collection
By Stacey Cochran
If you want the best all-around collection of Henry Kuttner short stories, this is the book for you.

This collection includes: "Mimsy Were the Borogroves"; "The Twonky"; "What You Need"; "Two-Handed Engine"; "The Proud Robot"; "The Misguided Halo"; "The Voice of the Lobster"; "Exit the Professor"; "A Gnome There Was"; "The Big Night"; "Nothing but Gingerbread Left"; "The Iron Standard"; "Cold War"; "Or Else"; "Endowment Policy"; "Housing Problem"; and "Absalom."

My favorite story was "What You Need" just because the idea behind it was so clever and, too, because I love the classic Twilight Zone episode that was based on it.

This collection also includes a very good introduction by Ray Bradbury titled "Henry Kuttner: A Neglected Master" written in 1974, which offers insights as to why Kuttner was not lauded critically the way that Orwell, Vonnegut, Heinlein and Wells were. It also says a lot about Bradbury himself, at a time when he was at the height of his powers.

The short stories in this collection first appeared between 1939 and 1955 in magazines like Astounding Science Fiction, Thrilling Wonder Stories, Amazing Stories, Unknown, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and as such, they offer a glimpse of what those magazines were like at that time. It was an era when a writer could actually make a living writing short stories. As such, this book is a pearl of wisdom and history, and it should not be forgotten.

A Forgotten Master
By John O'Connor
Henry Kuttner was a master of thoughtful, humorous and bitter scifi. He was so prolific that he used at least 5 pen names, including Lewis Padgett. My all time favorite story is "Mimsy Were The Borogroves". If that story doesn't give you shudders, then you are no longer alive. His stuff was well written, well plotted and wonderfully presented. If you have never read Kuttner, I envy you. Reading him for the first time is an amazing experience. Please get this book, in whatever form you can.

Mimsy Were the Borogoves
By Bernie
Worth it for Mimsy alone; however the other stories are a bonus.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wade;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe." Lewis Carroll

"Mimsy Were the Borogoves" is on tape and even on vinyl at one time. It can also be found in some of Henry Kuttner books.

It is a small sci-fi story about a formula that allows you into an alternate universe that everyone used to have access to. The problem with getting there is that it requires a different paradigm and a formula. The paradigm requires a mindset that disappears as we get older and the formula is in front of us if we know where to look. An added plus is that the tape version is read to us enthusiastically by William Shatner.

Playing around with time travel he needed something to put into the cube. He chose some of his old toys. The box never came back. After trying for a second time with no success he gave up and moved on.

Learning Apache Karaf, by Johan Edstrom, Jamie Goodyear, Heath Kesler

In Detail

Apache Karaf is more than just an OSGi-based runtime container; it’s an ecosystem of open source technologies that makes operating and managing applications easier. Karaf supports hot deployment of OSGi bundles by monitoring jar files inside the [home]/deploy directory. Each time a jar is copied in this folder, it will be installed inside the runtime. You can then update or delete it, and changes will be handled automatically. In addition, Karaf also supports exploded bundles and custom deployers.

Learning Apache Karaf will introduce developers and administrators alike to the OSGi-based container, and impart best practices by example. The book shows you how to set up an Apache Karaf distribution, and how to arrive at a production-ready deployment. Learning Apache Karaf teaches you everything you need to install, configure, and administer Apache Karaf.

Learning Apache Karaf will help guide you through the complexity of an OSGi container using sample code and configuration snippets to demonstrate the important aspects of managing and running a Karaf instance.

Learning to install and command the runtime is just the beginning; deploying and provisioning applications is just as important to the successful implementation of a stable and scalable architecture. You will discover how to monitor runtime environments using remote access, logging, and JMX, and you will also develop production-level architectures with high availability and security.

The book is a fast-paced guide full of step-by-step instructions covering all aspects of application development using Apache Karaf.

Who this book is for

Learning Apache Karaf will benefit all Java developers and system administrators who need to develop for and/or operate Karaf’s OSGi-based runtime. Basic knowledge of Java is assumed.

A $15 book for $37.00 or Read the Fine Web Pages
By J. West
Ouch. $37.00 for 99 pages (plus 6 pages of general Karaf commands (available on-line), 4 pages of index). This book is a big disappointment. The first 6 pages is boiler plate prefix.

Chapter 1 is dedicated to downloading and installing Karaf. I'd like to point out, this I purchased this book because I had already downloaded and installed Karaf. Not really that useful.
Chapter 2 is a repacking of web pages I had already found (karaf commands and creating custom commands, but it lacked the detail to actually get it working
Chapter 3. Mostly a repacking of web pages already found. One exception: Failover configuration (but no detail on HOW failover works)
Chapter 4. Really needs more detail on Maven. Most disappointing omission was creating Karaf features. I had to do some trial-and-error experimentation to get a feature repo working (you have to get the names in the KARAF_HOME/etc/org.apache.karaf.features.cfg correct). The authors DON'T COVER THIS
Chapter 5. Had some good stuff (hadn't already found it anywhere else)
Chapter 6. Building an offline repo, something I had been searching for (10 pages worth paying for)
Chapter 7. Clustering ... again, something I had been searching for (another 10 pages worth paying for)
Chapter 8. Repacking of an on-line web page.

So I paid $37.00 for 30 to 40 pages of helpful information, $1/page seems excessive. The Authors could have included a lot more detail on Karaf and Maven (looks like you have to have some significant mastery of Maven to master Karaf) and more detailed examples. This looks like a rushed job to me and I will think long and hard before ever purchasing a book from Packt Enterprise again

Great and broad overview of Karaf
By Plan C.
As the title says, this book is about "Learning Apache Karaf" and teaching the basics required to deploy and develop for Karaf. This is not meant to be "Mastering Apache Karaf" as I think another reviewer might have been incorrectly expecting. This is a "walk before you run" book that I think does an outstanding job teaching you the basics of how to utilize Karaf to deploy OSGi applications, and also dives into some of the specifics that set Karaf apart from other OSGi container projects.

Another review commented that the book is a repackaging of the Apache Karaf web site tutorial content, but that statement is simply inaccurate and misleading. The progression of learning is in a similar sequence to any tutorial on Apache Karaf, but the content is most definitely original and not a copy/paste of materials in the public domain as I think the other reviewer implied.

Overall I think this book accomplishes just exactly what it sets out to do, which is to bring a new user or developer up to speed on how to accomplish common tasks with Karaf. If someone is already up to speed on the basics of Karaf and desires a book covering a deep dive into the guts of things, then hopefully authors will consider a "Karaf Cookbook" or "Mastering Karaf" title in the future, and you definitely won't get that from the docs on the project site.

Good way to learn how to manage Karaf
By Steve Forsyth
A nice short read without all the fluff and filler that you sometimes get from technical books.

This book will take you from the basics of setting up Karaf to writing extensions as well as setting up clustering. Everything you need to know in order to manage Karaf.

If I heard something about the wind one more time.....
By Creekergirl
I gave this novel five stars because after the first two hundred pages it became one of the best novels I've read in a while. However, the authors repetitive reference to "wind" every two paragraphs started to wear on my nerves.

I have recently reviewed another novel where I said that it had the longest love scene ever, but now I have to change that. This novel had the longest and most sincere love scene. The tender feelings that were expressed in the scenes were so strong that I nearly wept. This author knows how to make a reader want more and more.

There were some things that I really didn't like, but still doesn't take away from the five star rating I'm giving this novel.

One is how cruel the hero is throughout the first half of this book. I've read Karen Robards "Island Flame" and didn't get as offended as I did with Wolfe. He wears Jessie down until her arms lock up from exhaustive use trying to prove to him that she has what it takes to be a frontier wife. During all this he taunts her and belittles her.

Another thing that grated on my nerves was Jessie's fear of childbirth and the marriage bed. It went on way too long during the novel, should have ended midway, but her fear took over till close to the end. However, when Wolfe and Jessie make up, it was well worth the hair pulling on the reader's part. I've not read a book that touched me like this one for a very long time. And I've never wanted to weep by the sweetness of the hero to the heroine. The words that were spoken from Wolfe to Jessie (and vice-versa) were so heart wrenching that I was blinking back my tears.

All in all, Only Mine has got me reading Western Historical romances now, hoping that I can find other novels so great. To finish a book in five and a half hours shows that Elizabeth Lowell is definately an author among authors.

Wonderful!
By Amazon Customer
I reread "Only Mine" last night and was once again surprised by how much I enjoyed the book. Wolfe and Jessi loved each other from the very beginning of the story. The problem was that Jessi trapped Wolfe into marrying her to get away from England and a forced marriage arranged by her guardians. Most of the book is about how Wolfe tries to force Jessi into getting an annulment, not understanding why she claims to need him so much. Jessica was a woman who was still haunted by a childhood that had left her emotionally scarred. Her struggles to fight back her demons and withstand the scorn of the man she loved were described so well that I almost felt like I was her. Lowell's amazing talent made this book a memorable romance novel with two very strong characters. "Only Mine" also has Caleb Black, Willow, Reno, and Whip, which made it even better. I would recommend that anyone who likes Lowell read the entire "Only" series, because all of the books are wonderful.

I honesty cannot believe that others gave this book 5 stars
By A Customer
I am normally a fan of Elizabeth Lowell's. However, this book is certainly not for those who have out-grown the whole "man who loves a woman yet is emotionally abusive to her" type of novel. Not only does the "hero" Wolfe literally spend 300 pages verbally abusing and punishing the heroine, his sins are simply absolved at the end of the story when he says "I love you" for the first and only time on the very last page of the book. So realistic. This book is told almost entirely from the heroine's perspective, and Wolfe is really a brute. The conclusion of the book is also almost identical to the conclusion of "Only His".

Great material for those wishing to transition from AE to Nuke
By Eric S Keller
Fantastic book for people like me who know After Effects and want to learn Nuke. And just as good for those who want to transition from Nuke to AE or for anyone who wants to learn both! Lee has done a great job writing each tutorial with an AE version and a Nuke version and then filling it in with all the necessary background information as well. This is a great book for professionals. i highly recommend it!

Digital Compositing, the unsung hero
By Kirk W. Buckendorf
While not as glorious as 3D animation or as artsy as digital design, digital compositing is the unsung hero of multiple industries. Without it the 3D animation would never make it to the screen and beautiful artwork would never come alive.

As an industry professional and project manager for a video slot design company I use After Effects more than any other program. Our animation departement uses After Effects to bring Illustrator artwork to life with animation unparalleled in the industry. Digital composting programs are very powerful tools, when a client needs animation in a key colored transparency, I use AE effects to quickly give each frame a hard edge dithered to a background and drop a green key behind it all. When used in games you'd never know that it was a simple key colored gif being used as there are no pixelated edges or green halos no matter how intense the animation. With that I'm always looking for new tricks to make my professional life easier.

I'm always blown away by the power and depth of programs like AE and Nuke. This book is written by an industry giant that makes me feel like a mere mortal in terms of understanding the programs. But thankfully he puts, in tireless detail, much of his knowledge in a form that is easy to grasp and quick to reference. The companion DVD is very useful in illustrating many of the featured technique's finer points. There is much I knew the programs are capable of and searching the web for the right tutorials can often be unrewarding. This book outlines many of the techniques I'm looking for and more I didn't even know I needed but are now invaluable.

A must have for any industry professional or student.
