About the Author
David Annandale is the author of the Yarrick series, consisting of the novella Chains of Golgotha and the novel Imperial Creed, as well as the Horus Heresy novel The Damnation of Pythos. For the Space Marine Battles series he has written The Death of Antagonis and Overfiend. He is a prolific writer of short fiction, including the novella Mephiston: Lord of Death and numerous short stories set in the Horus Heresy and Warhammer 40,000 universes. David lectures at a Canadian university, on subjects ranging from English literature to horror films and video games.
John French has written several Horus Heresy stories including the novellas Tallarn: Executioner and The Crimson Fist, and the audio dramas Templar and Warmaster. He is the author of the Ahriman series, which includes the novels Ahriman: Exile and Ahriman: Sorcerer, plus the short story ‘Hand of Dust’: Additionally for the Warhammer 40,000 universe he has written the Space Marine Battles novella Fateweaver, plus a number of short stories. He lives and works in Nottingham, UK.

Despite news making events in the Middle East, for the past nine months, of the Arab Spring, the Arab world has been hardly understood, and its history was poorly conceived in the West. The late distinguished historian Hourani's masterwork, "A History of the Arab Peoples," an introductory text for Arab history, is a panoramic view which encloses fourteen centuries of Arab history and culture. Written by the British-born Lebanese historian Albert Hourani, it was translated into Arabic, and has found some currency in Arabic schools and universities. Hourani brilliantly provided an understanding of the people and events that have essentially shaped the Arab world. Albert Hourani was Emeritus Fellow, St. Antony's College, Oxford. He died in 1993.

Although some pre-Islamic history is included as a prologue, the book mainly exposes the history of the Arabs(now 22 Arab speaking countries and Gulf emirates), since the advent of Islam to the late twentieth Century. Hourani examines Arabic-speaking nations of the Islamic world from the seventh century to the present in a volume that became both a bestseller and an instant classic, upon the release of its first edition in 1991, on bestseller lists for 12 weeks. Hourani's masterwork was hailed as the definitive story of Arab civilization and culture, written by an expert who knows well both the language and the culture. The book was referenced in the Lecture course "The United States and the Middle East: 1914 to 9/11".

Hourani, acutely aware of methodological commitments of historiography, became specialized in intellectual history, which constitute the main focus of his book. He follows the methodology employed by Ibn Khaldun in his Muqaddimah, specifically the reliance on asabiyyah, concept of bond of cohesion, as a means of accounting for dynastic and political changes. Thus, the book involves a considerable amount of social as well as economic history to account for the rise and subsequent fall of historical Islamic powers such as the Umayyad and Ottoman Empires. Considerable reasoning is given, explaning the rise of Arab nationalism in Syria and Egypt, Salafism in Saudi Arabia, Ba'athism in Syria and Iraq, Islamism in Lebanon and Gazza. Ruthven notes in his afterword, that much of the rise of Islamism advanced after book publication.

This seminal book is now available in an updated expanded second edition. Noted Islamic scholar Malise Ruthven, an Irish academic and writer brings the story up to date from the mid-1980s. He is a former editor with the BBC Arabic Service in London and is the author of Islam in the World. A History of Islam and its Followers

"A History of the Arab Peoples" focuses extensively on Islam's origins and the transition of Arab society from tribal communities, to Islamic empire, to political nation-states. The book is impressively thorough in its exploration of Islam's various intellectual strands. The book proceeds chronologically, but it is much more topic driven than event driven. Hourani is more interested in describing life in the Arab world in broad terms rather than recounting the exploits of important individuals. Thus you will learn a lot about the evolution of Islamic law, but very little about Saladin or Suleimein.

Hourani writes in an enjoyably magisterial tone that rarely appears in modern histories, but at times this can be more distracting than lyrical. For example, when describing the pilgrimages to Mecca from Damascus and Cairo, he states that "Of the two, that from Damascus had a greater importance..." but on the next page informs us that "The caravan which started Cairo was no less important." These types of empty judgments and other assumption-laden paragraphs render some of Hourani's arguments less than convincing, but overall there is a wealth of reliable information presented. I do not recommend this book for readers new to the subject, but students and scholars of Middle Eastern history or Islam should find this book informative if slightly frustrating at times.

As Director of St. Anthony’s College’s Middle East Center, Professor Hourani acquired a reputation for resolute evenhandedness with regards to Middle East topics and issues. His book serves as a useful introduction to the history of the Arabs from the rise of Islam until just before the Gulf War in Iraq. Hourani uses clear language to create powerful images while presenting a concise overview of a considerable time span. He covers the evolution of Islam as well as the social and cultural evolution of Arabs from Morocco to the Persian Gulf. Exploring the daily lives of women and fellaheen, merchants, and the educated elites, among others, Hourani portrays the lives of the people in society highlighting many of the rich cultural traditions. Using explicit details with incredible scope and breadth, he also explores Islamic law, theology, and spirituality as it developed over time.
Aside from the comprehensive aspect of the book, Hourani succeeds best at discussing major events and issues that evolved over some 1300 years with elegant writing condensed into a single volume. This book is a useful read for the beginning student of the region in need of a broad understanding as well as anyone interested in an evenhanded review of the Arab peoples.

Francesco Malatesta, born in 1990, is a web developer and a curious enthusiast from Vasto, a wonderful city on the Italian eastern coast. Good book on eloquent

This book is a good introduction to Eloquent. The author does decent job of filling in the gaps of the Laravel documentation. I did find a couple of items for an errata but nothing major and all easy to see what was meant. The English phrasing used did make me smile a few times but the author's English is better than my Italian (by orders of magnitude) so I'm not throwing stones.

Greate book on Laravel`s ORM: Eloquent

This is a good book!
It`s easy to read, good examples to help you understand the features and concepts of Eloquent. I am used to write my SQL query by hand, so this ORM-thing is a transition, but this book made me enjoy letting go of the control. It`s nice to not have SQL in my PHP code... Lots of good overviews in lists and tables makes it easy grasp the information. All my questions and skepticism where met and put to ease (advanced where-clauses, table joining, delete without really deleting (soft delete), query scopes (because you don`t want to repeat yourself, but a lot of queries will have the same constraints, and sometimes these can be advanced), conversion to array and JSON and so one. The book is awesome, and so is Eloquent!

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. It is a deep dive into Laravel's Eloquent ORM. It takes you through every aspect of Eloquent and even shows how to use Eloquent on it own outside of Laravel. I feel very confident using Eloquent after reading this book, I was a little unclear on how relationships worked even after reading Laravel's API documentation... this book cleared up any doubts. Another great thing about this book is it takes a look at Collections which are very powerful. I would like to see this author write another book exploring the whole Laravel framework in depth.

The joy of exploration

Larkin captures the heart-thumping thrill of world exploration with surgical precision. One can only assume that she has the heart of an explorer to have been able to capture the mind of John Cabot so utterly. She is our generation's Boswell, only with the lyric sensibility of a true poet. A must-read.

There are some twists and turns in the book that will surprise you, and make you laugh

Lady Killer is the second book to a series called Tangled Desires by Misti Murphy. This book is about two people who have a complicated situation in their lives that either have them on the run or searching for someone. They end up meeting one another, and their lives get even more complicated.

Enter Gemma, Gemma is part-time veterinarian who is on the run for her life from her ex-boyfriend trying to kill her. Running from place to place she is forced to change her name so that she stays under the radar. Signing up to a gym to release some stress, she didn’t expect to run into is Tom Hadley. Feeling more than attracted to him, she knows she cannot let herself fall for his charms, or let him get involved in her mess of a life.
"I must have zoned out completely. He’s staring at me like he’s been waiting ages for an answer. “I really don’t think it’s a good idea. With other complications already in his life, should he really be adding hers as well?

This book is amazing, when you first start to read it, it grabs your attention right away. The author tends to switch between the two characters, so that you’re able to see from both of their view points. There are some twists and turns in the book that will surprise you, and make you laugh. I enjoyed the book and will be searching for the first book as well as the next one after this one. I advise you that when you read this book be somewhere, that no one will bother you. You won’t want to stop reading once you begin.

Sweeter but as sexy as Razer and Claire's fairytale, this book will make you develop an obsession with all of them and a deep envy to belong to this family!! All sizzling hot and complete alpha males, the Hadley men will melt your heart and put butterflies in your stomach! We discover another side of Tom in "Lady Killer", his true nature and all his mysteries finally revealed. Surprising without being any less hot and steamy, Lady Killer is just a wonderful read!!!! Well written with a good plot, lots of twists and turns, i couldn't put it down!!! Misti Murphy does it again and offers us an amazing book! Two thumbs up in the air!!!!

Lady Killer is Book 2 in the Tangled Desres Series. It picks up a couple of weeks after the end of Prick Tease. Both are standalone novels that I recommend reading.

Lady Killer is the highly enjoyable story of Tom and Gemma finding their way through the minefield of their pasts to emerge stronger, confident of who they are and what they truly want, determined to meet all challenges head-on and never settle for less. They learn what people think they know to be true may be only illusion and never judge someone based solely on their reputation. By the end of the story they are both better people and I know they are truly committed to making HEA a reality.

The story is well-written, moves at a good pace, has likable characters, and held my attention from beginning to end. I am looking forward to Book 3: Cocky F@#ker, which will delve into the relationship of Mace and Chelsea. I highly recommend reading both Prick Tease and Lady Killer.

The Printed Book Might Be a Better Choice

This is an enjoyable short children's book with fun artwork. Setting is 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans, and features D-Type Jaguars.

One caveat for Kindle 3 viewers! This book does not work well on Kindle 3. The format appears to be a series of art and stylized fonts which are all treated as an individual picture for each page. This results in a very small font size, unless zoomed up to a large level which requires slow and tedious scrolling to read.

I finally downloaded the book to my computer, but many of the words were still fuzzy, unclear and difficult to read.
