The Dairy Of Clotee, A Slave Girl

I rated this book 5 stars because if you read this this you can learn a lot about African American were treated and there was a lot of racism back then when there was slavery.
Clotee is a slave and she is a fanner when the master's son learns, slaves don't learn how to read because they would send message to the underground railroad people to help them get their freedom write but Clotee does and she tries to not get caught. And some try to risk their life for freedom.My favorite part is when the slaves try to get their freedom.I'm worried when I read this part because they have to not get caught and make it across the river to the other side. The master never taught the slaves how to swim because they could swim to the other side to be free but they still have to go with the underground railroad conductor. But at the same time I read it I was excited because I wanted to know if they would make it or not.It was very hard to be African American back then because you were a slave and some times separated from your family. Willam, the master's son,likes Clotee and he doesn't tell his dad about anything she does or command her to do stuff because they're like best friends.

great book, lousy binding

Our daughter has probably read this book hundreds of times. It's a very well written, accessible, kid-friendly book about slavery. The first time we bought it, we got it at Goodwill. Then the binding fell apart - after about 50 reads, but she kept on reading it, clipping the loose pages together! - so I decided to replace it. What a surprise to find it for 1 cent! Naturally, I bought it. She was overjoyed to have a fresh copy with all the pages attached to each other. She has read it another hundred times, and the binding has deteriorated again. If I could find it for a penny again, I'd buy it again, and again and again.

So amazing!

I really like this book because it gives such a good background on what life was like for slaves without getting too gruesome for children. It is such a good story. The plot moves along very quickly and keeps your attention until the very end. It is an easy enough read for kids without too many difficult words. It is really an exciting book and I would recommend it to anyone!
