It's also a great resource for the novice and veteran teacher alike
By aaron lemos
As a high school video production teacher this is a book I've been waiting for to use in my classroom. The structure of the book follows the structure of a high school video/filmmaking class and is very accessible for high school students. It's also a great resource for the novice and veteran teacher alike. I like the fact that it is not written in a stuffy, textbook from on high type of style. The exercises at the end of each chapter are valuable and are a great jumping off point to get students engaged in the process of being filmmakers and not just another kid with a camera.

The Broad Brush
By Conrad J. Obregon
I've taken an interest in using the video capabilities of my DSLR camera. My grandson has indicated an interest in "getting into video", whatever that means. That made an introductory book on Video Production interesting to me.
"Video Production 101" looks like the introductory book for a course in video that its authors meant it to be. The chapter headings give no hint as to what each chapter contains, and sometimes it's difficult to guess from reading the section headings. What the book does is provide a broad brush view of every aspect of video, from creating a story to capturing an image. Most of this is very general so that if you are interested in learning how to edit clips you will learn that it can be done using software but not how to do it. If you came to this book wondering how to use a camera to capture an image, you won't learn here. You will learn the difference between a close-up and a long shot and you will learn that there are controls on the camera that let you adjust focus and aperture, but not how to apply that knowledge.
At first, one might think that is not very practical. But if you approach video from a particular skill, like say writing, you will understand how that skill fits into the larger world of video and that should help you to be a better writer for video. If you know nothing about video but are interested in getting a general background, this book will do the job.
It is clear that the book is aimed at people hoping to make a career out of video. It is an introductory textbook, after all. However, many parts of the book will be of interest even to folks who think of themselves as just watchers. For example, a section called "The Poetry of Content Creation" discusses the characters in a story and the structure of stories. This information may hone your critical skills as a watcher. The explanation of the job titles of people who are involved in video production will at the least help you understand the categories for which Oscars and Emmys are handed out.
Occasionally the authors dipped into technical information that was far more specific than most of the book, as when they explained how to handle conversations in a sound track to cover up room sound. I found the information, which I had never encountered before, useful for my own editing, although it might be too much for, say, a writer.
The writing is easy to understand and interesting, perhaps because it is keyed to a general audience.
This isn't a book that will teach you a lot of specific video skills. However, if you are getting into video production, it will provide you with the kind of overview you will need to do a good job.

An excellent all-round introduction showing how decent video production is so much more than "point and shoot".
