Amazon.com Review
Jim Rogers became a Wall Street legend when he and George Soros founded the Quantum Fund. This is the fascinating story of his 1990 investing trip around the world by motorcycle, with many tidbits of hard-headed advice for investing in foreign markets.

From Publishers Weekly
Those wanting to make a killing on the Botswana stock exchange should pass up this book. Combining a travel narrative with economic advice, Rogers, who teaches business at Columbia, recounts his 20-month global motorcycle tour with his "tall, leggy and blonde" 23-year-old girlfriend, Tabitha. As the two pass through a region, he sizes up the local economy and recommends investment strategies. Often Rogers's tips seem on the mark, as in Eastern Europe and Asia. Yet for other places, Africa in particular, he appears uninformed. Predicting Zaire's imminent collapse, Rogers declares, "Zaire hasn't had its civil war yet," ignoring the Congo crisis of 1960-1965. Such inaccuracies mar what is otherwise an entertaining and unique world tour. Overall, the intended breezy blend of business and travel instead feels like the zigzagging of a man who rarely leaves his preconceptions behind, no matter what lies in front of him. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Rogers, a notable Wall Street financier/investor who retired at age 38 after making a fortune, is a born risk-taker. In 1990 he took the biggest risk of his life by setting out on a BMW motorcylce to circumnavigate the globe, accompanied by his girlfriend. The journey lasted 20 months; the couple traveled more than 60,000 miles across 51 countries on six continents. Why did Rogers do it? Quite simply, to see the world. He offers insightful commentary into the various places he visited both as a savvy tourist and a knowledgeable investor. He found several countries ripe for investment opportunities (notably China, South Africa, and New Zealand) and determined others, in the parlance of Wall Street, to be a "short sale." Some of his analysis is not original (e.g., his observations that the United States is becoming a "statist," quasisocialist state), but much of what he has to say is thought-provoking. Recommended for all public libraries with large nonfiction collections.

More great lessons from a true explorer--a true patriot--a financial "scientist"
By D. J Najarian
Despite many comments in other reviews, this book is much, much, more than a travelogue...it is essential reading for all long term investors...moreover, it ought to be essential reading for all government officials who want to keep America great. After traveling around and seeing all these countries, it is hard to see how another human being could have acquired the scope of knowledge that Rogers now possesses...so his wisdom counts! Major lesson from this book include:

1)the major focus of government should be (besides defense, police, fire, etc.) to get out of the way and unleash the desire of the population to chase high return opportunities...but not to protect the population from competition

2)eliminate protectionism and subsides for all industries within the economy...allowing one's industries to take its lumps in the world wide competitive market...otherwise, those industries will not innovate to the degree needed to stay competitive on the world market

3)nothing in society is permanent...the most successful societies adapt to and embrace change and competition...the least successful ones--the ones that end up dying--reach a point of success...then get fat and happy and try to preserve their status at all costs

4)do NOT leave your finances in the hands of others...even Jim Rogers did this...and he had his money stolen out from under him!!

5)stable, long term relationships are invaluable...poor Jim travels around with this "young leggy blonde" (who my mom referred to as a "tart")...who he obviously loves...but who appears to have "hit the road" after the trip...too bad...

Required reading!
By Mike Mark
This should be required reading for any economics course! (or for global investing ...of course ;) My eyes are opened. Jim has accomplished something that may never be repeated. He completed an amazing land journey through territories of every kind on earth. He experienced the people, the lifestyles, the local markets, the capital markets, the currency markets and the black markets of the world. His experience relates cause and effect of political and economic policies of over fifty countries. He has travelled our global economic history and laid it all down in an clear, concise and exciting text that will have you churning paper as you roar through it.

I learned alot. I want more!

Thank you!

Remarkably gripping.
By A Customer
I was somewhat surprised at how engrossed I became in this. I enjoyed the travel descriptions in part because they were so brief---where some authors might have expanded to cover full chapters, Rogers writes a single paragraph. It's unlike many travel books, but has a delight of its own.
As for his views on investment opportunities, even his more outrageous ideas (Alaska, the Yukon, Western Canada and the North West US all seceding to create a new country?) are interesting for their novelty, while some of his observations make a lot of sense (I've long had his positive opinion of Botswana, and his theories of the reosurces of Siberia being exploited through Chinese labor and Japanese capital are not a crazy bet).

Practical book on time series econometrics
By frank lindemann
I am a Financial Engineer working primarily in risk management. Over the past few months I've had to study up on time series-related topics (both GARCH and cointegration-based analyses). This book is excellent for someone who needs to find time-series information and then apply it to a problem in a hurry. The explanations are clear and intuitive, yet mathematically precise. There are plenty of examples on how to apply techniques to real world problems, including lucid discussions of the proper statistical tests to use for the various methodologies.

Like many engineers, I often find myself scrambling to find a good source for a model or system component I will have to design, usually under tight time constraints. This is a perfect example of the type of textbook I always hope to find when starting such a task.

Quite good but...
By Ruben BA
OK, the book is not that bad, it explains the theory clearly BUT it is "applied" and there is no solutions to the exercise books in the authors webpage (although they do include the data sets for the exercises). I know it's common nowadays to edit books with math exercises without a solutions manual (or at least a pdf file online) but it doesn't change anything.

So yes, it's a good book to read, but how will you be sure you understood what you've read if you can practice it?

It is really boon in time series world
By Faturachman
Enders's book is really boon in time series world. First, you no need to worry; the book is not as thick as your pillow, it brings you to time series world through simple way. Second, besides Enders makes things in simple way, the explanation is "digest-able" for people with less background in math or linear algebra and for those who eagerly want to know what time series really is. Third, Enders's book is an oasis for people who devote his/her life for research, and also for academic world as well as graduate students. Amazon.com Review
Suitable for anyone with a little C/C++ programming experience who wants to create software for the newest Mac platform, Cocoa Programming for Max OS X provides a slickly packaged and approachable tutorial that will get you started creating state-of-the-art Mac programs.

The smart presentation style and easy-to-understood code examples help make this text an excellent resource. (It also helps that Aaron Hillegass is a truly engaging writer.) He first explains how the legacy NeXTSTEP platform has evolved into Cocoa on the Mac OS X. Beginning with short examples illustrating the actual Cocoa tools in action, the author gets you started with simple programs for a random-number generator, a raise calculator, and other comprehensible examples. Rather than just listing APIs and classes, the emphasis is on hands-on Cocoa development. An early standout section provides a nice tour of essential Objective-C features you'll need to know to use Cocoa effectively.

This book covers the several dozen built-in Cocoa controls, from basic text and buttons to more advanced widgets (including lists and tables). Subsequent sections look at user interface design (using the Interface Builder to create nib files) and how to add programmatic processing behind the visual layout. Along the way, the author introduces coverage of essential Cocoa APIs for strings, arrays, and dictionaries. Later chapters look at saving and loading documents (and user defaults) and how to tap the powerful graphics abilities available in Cocoa. (Besides image and basic drawing, there are short sections on PDF support and printing.)

More advanced user interface features get their due by the end of the book, including cutting and pasting data through the Cocoa pasteboard and also adding drag-and-drop support. Final sections look at creating new controls for use with the Interface Builder palette, and, briefly, how to use Java with Cocoa (an option that the author doesn't necessarily recommend). Throughout this text, the author provides more advanced, challenging problems at the end of each chapter for the "more curious" reader. This approach keeps beginners from getting lost in the details of Cocoa development, but gives the more advanced reader something more to do.

While there are comparably fewer books on Mac OS X compared to other platforms, readers are lucky to have this one available. Anyone who wants to get onboard with Cocoa development will be well served by this title. It's a fine tutorial that earns high marks for its approachable, clear examples and an excellent presentation by an author who knows his stuff and, better yet, knows how to teach it to others. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Brief history of the Mac platform (from NeXTSTEP to Mac OS X), basic Cocoa development in Objective-C, using Project Builder and Interface Builder tools, tutorial to Objective-C (instances, variables, using classes, arrays and other containers, custom classes), the Objective-C debugger, basic Cocoa controls (building user interfaces), tables and data sources, event handling and delegates, archiving documents (encoding and decoding, saving and loading documents), Nib files, window panels, saving and retrieving user defaults (including using dictionary classes), notifications (observers and more on delegates), alert panels, localization (including string tables, a English and French example, the nibtool utility), custom views and drawing, drawing images and mouse events (plus coordinates systems and autoscrolling views), responders and keyboard events, fonts and strings (including attributed strings and PDF support), pasteboards and nil-targeted actions, using Objective-C categories (a code reuse feature), drag-and-drop support, timers, sheets and drawers, formatting strings, printing support, on-the-fly menu updating, text editing with text views, basic tutorial for using Java with Cocoa, and custom Interface Builder palettes (and inspectors).

--Andrew Stone, President, Stone Design, www.stone.com

Guiding programmers through the key features of Cocoa, this book emphasizes design patterns that enable you to predict the behavior of classes you have never used before. Disappointing - The Best of a Bad Bunch
By commiepinkofag
I had high hopes for the 4th edition of this book. The authors clearly have considerable expertise, but the book isn't particularly well written and suffers from all the typical maladies of tech publishing: poorly organized, badly designed, full of errors, cheaply printed, and overpriced. Rather than improving on version 3, it's a slapdash edit thrown together merely to include changes Apple made to Xcode and the compiler in 2011. It reads like a promising middle draft of what might have been a terrific book.

In general, Big Nerd Ranch's books have the feel of something assembled from classroom materials. This is unfortunate - one suspects the classes are terrific, but a great book takes more than that and great teachers are not necessarily good writers. (And engineers almost never are.) In particular, there are far too many rabbits pulled out of way too many hats - "do this - wow!", "do that - kaboom!" - with insufficient background. Demos work great in the classroom where one can ask direct questions, but I'd prefer a book that takes a problem solving approach with clearly defined goals and equally explicit explanations of why certain approaches are superior to others.

The best parts of the book are "Curious" and "Challenge" sections at the end of each chapter, which require independent thought and adapting concepts and techniques to serve actual needs. Would that the whole book had taken that approach. The worst part is the graphic design - the procedural instructions laid out in running text are unnecessarily difficult to follow and the reduced low-resolution screen shots are often barely legible. (Where did publishers get the idea that 72 dpi screen shots are acceptable in a $30 book?) Presenting this sort of information well in a 7" x 9" format is a difficult challenge the book's design fails to meet.

Certainly "Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X, 4th Edition" is better than the competition, but that's damning with faint praise. I found it difficult to use not least of all due to the nagging urge to rewrite it. But whatever the book's flaws, the tone of the writing is just right, the authors are clearly great guys who know their stuff, and they should be complimented for facing up to a difficult subject without any condescending "for Dummies" BS. There's a great deal of useful information I'm sure I'll benefit from revisiting it as my own expertise increases, but in general, the bar for tech writing is set way too low.

Fine training for intermediate or advanced programmers
By Jack Repenning
This book really is one of the best technical training books I've seen. The development is logical and clear. The detail level is good for anyone with a bit of basic C/Objective-C/C++/Java experience.
At the same time, while by no means a complete reference manual (those are on-line anyway, bundled with the developer tools), the book is very usable for the more-experienced developer. I've been programming professionally in C/C++/Java for 15 years or so, and found myself leaping ahead to advanced chapters (for example, to add a "sheet" to my growing app). This worked very well, and it's unusual for one book to work both for novice and expert, both sequentially and by random access.
The style is personal and personable. Possibly just a shade too much so: the principal flaw of the book is that Mr. Hillegass is still a bit caught up in some "object oriented" turf wars of a decade or so ago. If you want to learn to do object-oriented programming, or even what it is, this is quite the wrong place to go. And the worst of that problem is that the presentation seems to claim to be "OO" without either mentioning or demonstrating the modularity and suitability of design that are the actual roots of "OO".

Excellent Introduction
By A Customer
Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X is a GREAT way to learn the basics of programming Mac OS X! I've been a Mac user since 1988, but have always been terrified of programming it. Instead I'd gone the evil route and programmed Delphi for Windows. NO MORE. I'm excited about programming my Macs!
THE BAD
The title is probably a misnomer, which is causing a lot of the negative feedback here. "Complete Introduction to the Power Of Cocoa" would have been more appropriate. This book isn't any type of reference book. Nor is it a text on programming philosophy. Nor is it a "Learn Objective-C" manual. And it's not a comprehensive "learn everything about Cocoa" book. My positive remarks about these perceived liabilities are in "THE GOOD" paragraphs below.
There ARE some typos in the book, but no real errors in the code that I've discovered. In many chapters, you're adding to a program you've built from an earlier chapter. On two or three occasions, variable names in the "new" chapter are different from the "old" chapter. But when doing the build, it became quite obvious and wasn't really much of an impediment -- if you can't follow the program flow and detect the problem by time you reach these chapters, you probably rushed or shouldn't be programming! Still, though, it IS a legitimate "bug" in the book.
It's probaby useful that you know something about object-oriented programming. I don't mean knowing C or C++ or Objective-C -- just know a little about object-oriented concepts. Chances are, if you're a modern programmer, you already know enough to make this "bad" point meaningless. If you're a very advanced object-oriented programmer, you may want to FORGET some of what you know to appreciate the pure simplicity of the Objective-C/Cocoa object model!
THE GOOD
It's an in-depth introduction to programming Cocoa in Objective-C. It will get you excited. It will spark your imagination as you work through the example code. You will want to learn Cocoa and forget everything else.
If you know programming in general, you probably DON'T need to know C or C++ or even Objective-C prior to working with this book. I came to it with an Object Pascal background with no working knowledge of C. If you can THINK then you can pick up Objective-C as you work through the book. It's REALLY very simple, even in comparison to Object Pascal.
The book is very well supported on the website. There's even a page-search function with errata and user-feedback in case you get in trouble. I've used it for help with a couple of the chapter "challenges."
RECOMMENDATIIONS
Buy this book, and work through it, and try the challenges. You'll often HAVE TO work through the Cocoa documentation to do the challenges, but this is good because you'll need to learn how to use the documentation to do any serious work.
When you're done with the book, you'll be confident and thrilled, and be ready to buy a true reference book (which I'm just getting ready to do!).

It's a hot, hot summer, and in the depths of the Toronto Transit Authority's Lost and Found, 17-year-old Duncan is cataloging lost things and sifting through accumulated junk. And between Jacob, the cranky old man who runs the place, and the endless dusty boxes overflowing with stuff no one will ever claim, Duncan's just about had enough. Then he finds a little leather book. It's a diary filled with the dark and dirty secrets of a twisted mind, a serial killer stalking his prey in the subway. And Duncan can't make himself stop reading.

What would you do with a book like that? How far would you go to catch a madman? And what if time was running out....

Accelerate Your Heart Rate
By Jarrod T Thompson
Acceleration is a wonderfully written suspense novel. This book actually got my heart rate up. Finding out what acceleration means is an interesting part of this novel.

Some who are critical of this novel must not have read all of it because all of the preliminary facts and details suck the reader into the world of the main character, Duncan. By the time you realize you are totally immersed in the cold, dark, murky existence of Duncan and his nightmares, you are hooked.

McNamee does a tremendous job with the setup, which makes the climax a thrilling peak to the intriguing story of a lost soul who finds himself depressed by his recent past, and looking for a way to make up for mistakes he feels so much responsibility for.

The main character, Duncan, gets himself in WAY over his head and nearly drowns himself in a world of terror and PURE FEAR and adrenaline that moves this novel to a perfect conclusion.

Whatever the author did, he did it right because I forgot where I was and actually became immersed in the world that exists in the novel. I FELT the fear and the adrenaline rush that leads to the book's climax and resolution.

Fantastic book!

Realistic Characters, Strong Mood, Valuable Themes
By MC
Good characterization from Duncan to Vinny, Wayne, and Duncan's boss Jacob. Even the parents have personalities without taking up valuable story time. McNamee is able to develop these people through his scenes without annoying pauses from the story to set down details. McNamee also establishes the mood through Duncan's job at the Lost and Found (the Morgue). Duncan himself belongs at the Lost and Found as he sorts out his failure of last summer. Is he a hero or is he just like everyone else? The mood also comes through with Duncan's father's work on the night shift--his vampire habits which come across with humor and realism--and their home in the Jungle. McNamee establishes Duncan's life, past to present, and shows how the 17 year old is in a rut. His discovery of the skin-covered journal revives him into action. With solid details about the true habits of serial killers, McNamee lends credibility to Duncan's tale.

The one flaw, which is the same flaw as Speak, is the tidy ending. However, changing the end would be a mistake. This ending allows for McNamee's theme to come through and allows us to cheer for the hero.

A great read. I had to read the thieving of the toilet scene out loud to my wife--very funny. The best book I've read this summer.

Managing Up: How to Forge an Effective Relationship With Those Above You, by Rosanne Badowski, Roger Gittines

Everyone has a boss. And anyone who has aspired to move up the corporate ladder knows that their relationship with those they report to is crucial. In Managing Up Rosanne Badowski offers a straightforward, entertaining, no-holds-barred account of what it takes to make your relationship with your boss work to your advantage, no matter where you stand in the corporate hierarchy.

Told through rich, colorful anecdotes about her years spent working with one of the smartest, most demanding and dynamic business leaders of the twentieth century, legendary GE CEO Jack Welch, Badowski reveals the secrets to career success she has gleaned over the years. At heart, it’s about working with the person above you to create a productive and effective partnership.

Everyone is a manager, in one way or another, Badowski points out. She discusses first-hand what it’s like to have to be a mind reader, to anticipate the future, to plan for the unexpected, and to perform the impossible. With refreshing candor and a hint of attitude, Badowski’s advice is unlike any other. She advises us that “Impatience is a virtue,” to “Have no shame,” and to “Beware the too-quiet office.” Having worked in one of the most challenging, high-profile corporate environments anywhere, no one knows more about prioritizing, about making decisions on behalf of your boss, about sifting through a daily barrage of data and information, about multitasking at warp speed, and exhibiting grace under fire. Ultimately, Badowski says, excelling at what you do is about a shared passion for the job.

Managing Up is an invaluable guide for managing your career and juggling responsibilities with finesse and confidence. It should become a management bible for anyone hoping to get ahead in their profession.

Amazon.com Review
After fourteen years of working shoulder to shoulder with GE tough guy Jack Welch, Roseanne Badowski is not afraid of what she calls the "s-word." She argues that all of us are secretaries as well as managers. In Managing Up, Badowski leverages lessons she learned in building a stellar relationship with her boss. She offers smart and solid advice beginning with her "Can you start on Monday?" interview with Welch, and then turning to the skills of "navigating a boss Monday through Friday." The book' s chapter titles may sound prosaic, but her approach crackles with energy and fresh ideas. For example, she writes about trust by including "time-tested phrases for breaking bad news." She details the perils of being unprepared and puts in a good word for nagging. She also makes a persuasive argument for the advantages of cultivating impatience to enhance productivity. With splashy anecdotes and checklists, Badowski offers realistic and and disciplined counsel. Hero worshippers be warned: Although Welch wrote the book's introduction, Badowski is such an engaging no-nonsense advisor that she becomes the most compelling manager represented in her book. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly
The business book market is jammed with books for bosses, telling them how to manage, lead, create corporate strategy and get more from employees. Badowski's tome takes a different approach, but is just as useful: it's meant for all workers, regardless of their position. Because, as she wisely points out, everyone has a boss. Badowski, who has the distinction of being Jack Welch's former executive assistant, here explains how she survived and thrived during her 14-plus years as the boss man's "secret weapon." She's written a snappy little guide, mixing anecdotes with clear-cut tips on how to partner with higher-ups. She advises readers to "make the agenda of the person you work for your own" and asserts that "individuals solve problems-not senior management." Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to have had such a celebrated corporate leader as his or her boss. But if workers can follow Badowski's advice, they may find ways to win over crabby supervisors-or at least strengthen their relationships with other colleagues.

From Booklist
Who could resist learning the inner secrets of working with Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric? Badowski was Welch's administrative assistant for 13 years, and what she has to say about managing up is primarily based on common sense. The real lure here is the stories and anecdotes she shares about the great man and his team. Every one of her 15 ingredients for managing up, from chemistry to passion and purpose, is illustrated with GE--and Welch--examples. She talks about impatience as a virtue, noting that an impatient boss needs higher maintenance, which prompted her to develop an elaborate, color-coded filing system so that Welch could find needed materials quickly. Fairness is also defined in GE terms--Welch would categorize the workforce into three groups: 20 percent were stars; 70 percent fell in the midrange; and 10 percent were performance-challenged (and usually weeded out during evaluations). Thanks to coauthor Gittines, the narrative is smooth and personable. A fine introduction to the business world for new workforce entrants. Barbara Jacobs

By Jane Berger
"Managing Up" amounts to a practical and entertaining survival guide for those who find themselves somewhere on the food chain to the south of the lion kings of the corporate jungle. The author draws on her fifteen years as executive assistant to the legendary Jack Welch, former CEO of GE, to offer valuable insights, advice, and common sense perspective on what it takes to keep the boss happy, maximally productive, and hugely successful. Despite her admiration for Welch, Rosanne Badowski makes a compelling case for the vitally important role played by "support staff" in keeping business enterprises functioning smoothly. In fact, by the end of the book, it was clear to me that a considerable portion of the Jack Welch mystique was the product of the hard work, long hours and dedication that Badowski brought to the job. How do you run a massive operation like GE and spend almost every weekend on the golf course? You find a Rosanne, that's how. And what made "Ro" run? She says it's all about the pride and passion of being part of a winning team. But there is another P-word -- process. The Welch-Badowski team combined Jack's leadership genius with Rosanne's incredible talent for driving a relentless process that kept the CEO on top of things. "Managing Up" gives readers a good look at that process and at the rewards that come from hard work and doing one's best no matter who gets lionized.

Must read for executives and their assistants
By Verne Harnish
This is a must-read, fabulous and fun (quick to read) book. I've never read such a straightforward and insightful look into the specific daily routine, style, and approach of a top executive. From her invaluable list on page 114 (how to prepare Jack so he was effective in meetings) to Chapter 11 on simplicity and how the annual calendar shaped Jack's routine, I picked up so many practical tips. And if you only read four pages, read pp. 156 - 159. I personally enjoyed the insider stories behind the Kidder Peabody mess and how Jack handles adversity (hint, he doesn't spend one minute looking in the past), to what Jack emotional felt when he had to let an executive go. You just don't get these kinds of insights anyplace else.

Right on Target...
By Kollapse
...which explains her success as a partner with Jack Welch.

Ro has hit the nail on the head here. It's not really about keeping his favorite yogurt on tap or catering to his needs, it's about removing the obstacles and the minutiae so that the leadership can lead instead of wasting time on those things that can be done by others. It's more about being a true partner than it is about being a sterotypical assistant.

My take on this book is that although written by an assistant, it is applicable to anyone who has a boss and who wants to be a solution instead of just an employee. Many people take issue with being asked to handle things that they deem are "personal" for thier boss. That conversation is a waste of time and will be a deciding factor on how high you will go in your career. Make no mistake, for leaders of large organizations, there is no distinction between a personal and a work life. They are one. So, Ro really points out that being a solution for Jack sometimes meant that she had to make sure those "personal" things were managed to completion by someone other than Jack. That freed Jack up to take care of business.

Pre-managing your boss is a great way to bring speed to the entire organization. Ro stated early on that she was a creator of time. That is one of the most powerful offers that one can make to their boss and their organization. Time is the most precious asset that many of us claim to not have enough of. By ensuring that Jack didn't have to sweat the small stuff and sift through unneccessary crap, she was able to create the time for Jack to become the leader he is and to bring more prosperity to the organization and the people who support it. Be it personal or business, she handled it.

Observe also, that while many may think of Rosanne Badowski as just an assistant who wrote a book, she obviously has enough insight and leadership skills of her own to be the assistant of one of the most powerful CEO's for 14 years and...she wrote a book about it. I am also quite sure that she has enjoyed some prosperity as a result of her success with Jack.

The Hadith: Articulating the Beliefs and Constructs of Classical Islam (Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies)From Routledge

The Prophetic traditions of Islam, which are commonly referred to as the hadiths (literally: ‘reports’), preserve the sum and substance of the utterances, deeds, directives, and descriptive anecdotes connected with the life of the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions. Together with the Qur’an, the hadiths provide the religion of Islam with its principal scriptural sources.

The collection features an accessible and informative introduction which presents an outline of the significance of the hadiths within the religious tradition while also reviewing classical scholarship devoted to the literature of the traditions; moreover, the introduction decisively sets into context the academic debates and arguments which are fleshed out in the articles selected. It also charts developments in the academic study of hadiths, summing up the current state of the field and features a detailed bibliography listing primary classical sources germane to the field of Prophetic traditions together with recent research monographs and articles devoted to the subject.

This Major Work provides an authoritative collection of the seminal research articles produced by western academic scholarship on the subject of the hadith over the past century, including recent papers on the subject. In bringing together the finest examples of scholarship devoted to the hadith and the classical literature that surrounds it, these volumes provide an indispensable reference resource for academics, research institutions, governmental organizations, and those with a general interest in Arabic and Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, Arabic Cultural Studies, and Middle East History.

Review

The Ḥadīth. Edited by Mustafa Shah. Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies. London:

Routledge, 2009. Pp. 1,704. 650.00.

This is a magnificent collection of essays on the subject of ḥadīth scholarship. The

Routledge series of ‘Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies’, for those who are

unfamiliar with the format, marks an important new initiative in the publication of

material on the subject. Unlike the Variorum presentation with which most of us have

long been familiar, the articles in these volumes are completely re-typeset in a

common format and each volume is continuously paginated, all of which gives a

much greater homogeneity and elegance to the whole. All the collections amount to

between three and six full-length volumes. Among the other collections in the series

which are likely to be of interest to students of early Islamic studies are Colin Turner’s

collection on The Koran, Paul Luft and Colin Turner on Shi’ism, and Lloyd Ridgeon’s

two collections on Sufism and Islam and Religious Diversity.

In four volumes Mustafa Shah has collected no fewer than 61 papers reflecting many

different approaches to the subject. All the papers come from the Western academic

tradition and all of them are in English. The editor stresses that they are all peer

reviewed, though quite how far the term ‘peer review’ can really be used of

Goldziher’s work is debatable. Suffice it to say that all the articles and chapters (for

some of the pieces chosen are particularly important sections from full-length books)

are by established scholars in the field, and I think it is fair to say that every single one

of them makes important and relevant points. There are, so to speak, no weak links.

The material is arranged by topic and themes, though, as Shah points out, many of the

themes overlap and many of the articles deal with more than one of them. Volume I is

concerned with ‘Codification, Authenticity’, Volume II with ‘Isnāds: Transmission,

Terminology and the Issue of Dating’, Volume III with ‘Scholarship, Perspectives and

Criticism’ and Volume IV with ‘Narrative, Context and Content’. In addition to the

‘Introduction’, there is also a chronological table which arranges all the articles by

date of publication, ranging from Goldziher in 1889–90 (although his ‘Ḥadīth and

Sunna’ is presented in Stern’s 1967 English translation) to Jonathan Brown’s ‘How do

we know early ḥadīth critics did matn criticism and why is it so hard to find?’ of 2008.

This is a long time span, though it is worth noting that Goldziher’s contribution is the

only one which dates from before 1950, and the collection as a whole demonstrates

the vast explosion of scholarly interest in ḥadīth studies which was characteristic of

the second half of the twentieth century and shows no signs of diminishing in the

twenty-first.

The book opens with a substantial introduction by the editor. Considering the wealth

and variety of material in the four volumes, his summary is a masterpiece of clarity

and erudition, introducing the reader to all the main themes of the collection. In

particular, he takes Albert Berg’s division of scholars of ḥadīth into two separate

camps, the sceptical and the sanguine, and sees how different scholars fit into it.

There can be no doubt that the overriding theme in the collection, and indeed in the

whole scholarly discussion, is the question of dating and authenticity. The first paper

sets the agenda. It is often said that all Western philosophy is essentially footnotes to

Plato: it sometimes seems as if all of academic Islamic studies are essentially footnotes

to Goldziher. It was his essay, reproduced here, which raised for the first time the idea

that the ḥadīth as we have them now were essentially generated in the second/eighth

and third/ninth centuries to propagate a vision of Islam which had little if anything, to

do with the Islam of the time of the Prophet. Few now would accept his image of the

Umayyads as arrogant and godless tyrants, indeed recent scholarship has tended to

enhance the reputation of ʿAbd al-Malik, among others, as a serious figure in the

development of Islamic law, but his view of the elaboration of ḥadīth as a deliberate

construct of learned men still commands some support. And in the footsteps of

Goldziher comes, of course, Schacht with his almost blanket dismissal of Prophetic

traditions.

In the other, sanguine, camp Shah places Nabia Abbott, a brilliant textual historian

whose work is sometimes underestimated, Fuat Sezgin and Mustafa Azami, all of

whom stress the antiquity of the earliest written ḥadīth. At the same time he points out

that the debate has in many ways moved beyond this sharp polarisation: Harald

Motzki, for example, seeing the apparent dichotomy as far too clear cut to reflect the

reality of many much more nuanced points of view. At the same time Gregor

Schoeler’s work on the complex interaction between the oral and the written has

added a whole new element to the discussion.

One of the great strengths of a collection like this is that it enables the student or the

scholar approaching the subject for the first time to gain an overview of the whole

question or rather of all the questions. Shah’s choice of papers means that we can see

all the great names at their most cogent, staking out their territory clearly, without the

reader having to track down rare and obscure articles in hard-to-find periodicals. And

there are pieces on subjects that are all too easily overlooked, like Maribel Fierro’s

essay on the introduction of ḥadīth into Andalusia. The final volume moves away

from issues of dating and reliability into interesting discussions of the more literary

aspects of ḥadīth narratives, with chapters on narrative discourse and modern literary

theory, ethics and aesthetics in ḥadīth, dreams as means to evaluate ḥadīth and a

feminist interpretation of knowledge, women and gender in the ḥadīth.

This is an excellently chosen and carefully edited selection of papers. In many ways it

is a much better introduction to ḥadīth studies than any single text book could be,

because it gives an insight into the whole scope of the subject, not just the well

rehearsed variety of opinions on dating and authenticity, but the wide variety of

different approaches with which people come to the subject.
