Best Mono book yet

I prefer this book to the Mono : Developers Notebook which was also recently published. This book provides a much wider angle view on the .NET cross platform development space. For example, the developers note book covers TK#, this book covers TK# and #WT.

This book is much more architectural in design than the Developers Notebook. So if code is your thing then you may want to evaluate both. I personally prefer architectural perspective because in this case it's more about choosing a direction of development as opposed to learning the structure of the TK# library, which is interesting, but can be gleaned from the online documentation.

This is a must have book for anyone who wants to take their .NET code beyond the confines of the Windows operating system. It's well worth the price of admission.

alternatives to Microsoft

Microsoft and cross-platform?! Sounds like an oxymoron. Yet the book shows how .NET has given rise to this. The key step was Microsoft transferring the specifications of C# and .NET's CLI to ECMA and ISO. This lets third parties write compilers that produce IL bytecode and thence to assembly in a given hardware.

So you could write C# code on some platform, like linux. Then with Mono or Portable.NET, produce x86 binaries.

The authors describe the open source Mono and Portable, and compare these with Microsoft's own .NET offerings. They show that Mono and Portable are quite functional. For example, using Portable, you can write in Java, C#, C or VB.NET and compile.

The book goes into some moderate level of detail about CLI. But if you are a programmer in C# or C, say, and you just want to get native binaries, without wanting to know about CLI, the book is still useful. You can safely skip the CLI sections, without losing the gist of what you need to know. For many of us, whatever language we use, we don't need or want knowledge of a specific assembly language.

Good on principles, shallow on cross-platform libraries.

Okay, I got this book mostly to get into issues common to cross platform development. With focus on say, cross-platform gui libraries, and other cross-platform libraries.

In that I was a bit disappointed, but I was very happy to see how many somewhat advanced design principles were covered, and the breadth of this book. I am hoping that they expand into at least a companion book on maybe the Tao libraries, GTK#, wx.Net and other cross-platform libraries for front-end/interface coding.

I've also been reading the Nantz book for "Open Source .Net Development" and found it to be even more broad, and more shallow. Hopefully we will see some books that cover a bit more depth on fewer topics, and more specifically towards open-source cross platform libraries.

It is definately a good book, and covers a lot into the hows, and why's, but not so deep in any of the topics covered that you get a solid grasp on anything beyond design principles... This gives it a Four-Star rating in my book. It's worth a read for a mid-level developer looking to branch out into more serious development, or a development manager looking for better organization into development (cross platform or not). Don't expect to walk away comfortable on any of the tools that are mentioned in the book.

Well planned simplicity

I like to write poetry. A lot of people try to write it without understanding not only the heart required but the diligent labor for the precise words and their arrangement that allow the reader to participate in a grace of understanding. When I read some of my own creations I see where I’ve failed to strive hard enough to do just that. So I read the works of others to see how they handle this holy chore of writing. I ran across the poetry of Somali K. Chakrabarti on a poetry site I frequent. That in turn led me to her book Lei: A wreath for your soul. It doesn’t take long for me to know how far I want go into another’s work. If I don’t perceive quality quickly, I rarely persevere. But quality was apparent from the start.

Somali does not launch right into poetry but prepares the reader for what is to come; what she is trying to accomplish. She begins with a brief description of how social media has shaped our communications because the type of poetry she uses in the book, Haiku and Tanka, are suited to the short bursts of words in the digital world. She includes a brief history on these poetic forms that clearly depicts her reason for using them.
Thus enlightened the reader is ready for the divisions she has made by creating four categories (Nature, Life, Illusion, Inspiration) to accommodate the nuances of her poems. Each poem is given further expression by a picture and sometimes a quote or brief reference or explanation. This is not one of those books where one must wonder what was meant.

Haiku and Tanka, as you learn before you start reading the poems, are meant to convey essence of meaning, so each poem is short and minimal. It reminded me of taste testing chocolates from a large assortment. I can’t say there was a flavor I didn’t like. But there were certain poems that penetrated more than others with me like Soaking in Colours, Rainbow and the Moon, Everest and Fractals in Nature. Those poems are in the Nature section, and Somali has a gift for laying open nature with simple clarity. But my favorite section was Illusion. I particularly liked Spell and Dormant Desires. The pictures and the words worked seamlessly to offer a small but delightful illusion.

It would be easy to go on about this small gem of a book. Overall it had the feel of well-planned simplicity. I came to the end feeling a little lighter, that I’d learned something, and that I got more than I paid for.

Lei: A Must Read For Poetry Lovers

At the first glance to the book, Lei: A Wreath For Your Soul, which, according to the author, is “inspired by Nature, reflecting on life”, I was quite hopeful of it being a nice read for me. I'm a nature lover and I love to read, write and compose haiku. The book is a collection of poems written mostly in the forms of Japanese haiku (following the 5-7-5 syllable form) and tanka (following the 5-7-5-7-7 form).

Somali has categorized her poems under Nature, Life, Illusion, and Inspiration. All four are inseparable, Nature nurtures and inspires life and the latter often makes us wandering in the whirlpool of illusion.

The poems make you think, wonder and often you’ll be mesmerized by the way the author has painted the world with words. In poems where the syllables are numbered, one has to be nifty in choosing words, the end effect depending entirely on it. Somali has done it with ease, the readers almost lose themselves in the enjoyment of words.

Lei: A Wreath For Your Soul is a breezy read. Like the softness of the fragrant spring breeze, it leaves you in peace and comfort, desiring for more. I especially want to cite this tanka from the collection, this one, I think, has been nicely buoyed by a deep sense of philosophy:

Looking back in time,
joining dots, I find, a few
moments, which seemed
once mild, have surreptitiously
shaped and bent the course of life.

The book is an amazing read for all poetry lovers. I hope the author would come up with more of her collection in the future.

Beautiful and beautifully written

Lei: A Wreath for the Soul is a lyrical tour de force that captures the imagination by subtle degrees. But just like anything organic, the beauty and meaning of the poetry unfolds gradually and shyly, like the perfect flowers the author sometimes writes about. I was captivated by the contrast between the foreward and preface with its intellectual curiosity and the poetry and art itself which was layered and nuanced. The result is a collection of short gems such as Rainbow in the Moon which I reread several times over just for the sheer brilliance of the concept. I won't give anything away but lines such as "borrowed from the sun the waves mirror, photoshop the sky" indicate how textured and evocative the poetry in this book is I wouldn't mind at all if the author looked into the possibility of doing greeting cards or calendars. A little grace and inspiration gleaned from nature go a long way in today's hectic lifestyle.!

Demystifying the art of interviewing

There's an old journalists' saying - "you're only as good as your contacts", but in reality - "you're only as good as your interviews".
That's the subject of a new guide for journalists and writers which covers a broad range of topics and issues that comprise the art of interviewing.
'Interviewing' is written by two experienced Australian journalists: Gail Sedorkin, a journalism university lecturer and co-author of 'Get Your Message Across', who spent several years in newspapers and radio. Judy McGregor, a journalism professor, with 20 years experience as a newspaper reporter and editor.
The book is an essential guide to interviewing for both new and experienced scribes. It balances a plethora of tips, techniques and checklists with a variety of colorful and insightful anecdotes from some of the best known and highly regarded journalists in print and electronic media.
Some of the topics covered include:
* Types and styles of interviews (Vox pops, doorstops and ambushes, death knocks, rounds and events)
* Research
* Getting started
* Breaking the ice
* The questions
* Print and broadcast interviews
* Telephone and email interviews
* Handing the information (when to quote, naming sources)

Credible Resource for Journalists of All Experience Levels

There's a review of this book that says the book teaches nothing new to advanced, experienced journalists. I disagree.

As an associate editor of a national US publication, as well as a freelance writer/journalist/blogger/niche marketer ([...]) , having sharp journalism skills are required for success, especially when there's a blogger born every (nano)second.

Sedorkin outlines a several of the tools, tips, tricks and techniques I've intuitively picked up as a journalist and blogger over the past few years, and restructures them in an easy to digest format with enhanced details.

Much of my journalism and writing skills were personally developed via trial and error, and I've been working on developing a strategy to truly improve my game even better than ever - "upward progression in search of perfection" - and I think this book has definitely helped me.

One of the things I really would like to pride myself on is being able to consistently create a unique story. It's highly important to develop creative critical thinking skills as well as develop your ability to tap into the people you interview in an intuitive manner. There were many small tips and tricks - some of which you MAY learn working in the field, but many of which you won't that are covered. Notably, things like:

Intuitively developing angles on the spot to engage your interviewee
Improving your ability to skeptically question a source without making them defensive
Preparing your interview on a moment's notice
Controlling the flow of the information
Honing in on the questions and comments you use to get to the heart of a person and draw them out of their defenses

Overall, unless you're Robin Leach or have been doing this successfully for decades, you can never have too much information. One of the weaker aspects of this book is that it could veer off too much into profiling reporters a bit too much and that it's largely based on people in one or two regional areas - the UK and Australia... but overall it is an excellent resource. I'll be purchasing this book for reference on my Kindle Fire - when I finally buy one.

Nothing more than a good old search of Amazon drink a being frenzy for books on interviewing; as I was trying to increase the value for listeners of our 'PreneurCast' podcast show.

The Lesson/Argument in (About)Three Sentences...
I went to town on this books with the highlighter and post-it notes. Here are some of my favourite excerpts:
- The 'fact' interview usually concentrates on the Who, What, When and Where questions and is used for print news briefs and broadcast news stores, where space and time are limited. The interview for 'opinion' or 'comment' emphasises the Why and How questions, and is more commonly used in lover stories.
- Vox Pops: everyone who is interviews should be asked the same question; to canvass people's feelings about a persons' actions or a topical issue.
- There are times when you have to be brave enough to ask na�vely dumb questions without appearing completely stupid. Coax the subject of the interview to explain the background of a conflict, dispute or issues to that your audience will understand.
- Always be very clear on " what the point of the interview is"
-General Rule: DOn't supply questions in advance.
-Always research relevant icebreakers for the first few minutes of the interview (read their twitter or Facebook feeds)

Grand theory applied to everything

Christensen reminds me of Marx and Engles; having come up with a new perspective on economics they then proceeded to write volumes and volumes applying it to everything and anything. (even astrophysics) Some of their applications were profoundly inciteful and well researched, some of them were more like wishful thinking and some were downright silly. I think Christensen's book the "Innovator's Dilemma" will rank as one of the classics of economic and social theory, on a level with works such as "the Wealth of Nations". In "Disrupting Class", he applies his theory of disruption to the field of education and not only provides an analysis of the field but makes some very strong predictions. However, in the case of education, as opposed to business, the mechanism of social change is not clearly laid out. (This was the problem with all of Marx's grand predictions, as Elster pointed out) Businesses change because old ones go bankrupt and new ones take their place, yet unwieldy bureaucracies can remain that way for hundreds of years (the Vatican). I would like to believe in the future of education in "Disrupting Class" but there is not enough explanation in the book of how this will come about. Still an interesting and thoughtful book, but not his best.

Public educators need to understand what disruptive innovation means for our schools

This is a very well presented theory on the upcoming revolution in public education. Clayton Christensen has provided an interesting model of disruptive innovation that has impacted the business world numerous times, and he makes an excellent case for how it will now disrupt public education. Any educational leader who is either unfamiliar with Christensen's theory or who chooses to ignore it will be left behind as this disruptive revolution continues to grow in education.
I believe that public schools can become a part of the revolution if they can find a way to embrace all that innovative technology has to offer. I am sure that there is a model for blended learning that would entail the best that technology has to offer along with the personal interaction and support that a classroom teacher can provide. If public schools don't fully embrace a blended model of education that produces positive results and continues to remain adaptable to the changing demands that our society puts on public education, then the public schools could well lose out to charter schools and on-line learning.

The best education reform book I've read

Reform isn't going to happen from the top-down, it's going to happen from the bottom-up. Individual teachers and whole schools will innovate in ways that reach the outlier students who don't fit in to regular school. As mainstream schools continue to fail despite increased funding, these other schools will continue to innovate and attract more students. Eventually, mainstream schools will either die out because of a lack of enrollment or they'll adapt.

In my discussions with fellow grad students in education, not everyone believes the claims of the book, they don't think innovation will actually happen. Believe what you want, but this book rang true to me.

The author is witty, probing and painfully candid in her sympathetic piece about the violence Tina Turner suffered under Ike Turner's brutal control, but argues that Turner endured the beatings so long because of her own desire to be successful. Orth also uses icons Judy Garland, Madonna and Michael Jackson as examples of stars who portray themselves as victims to hold the limelight. The need for fame encompasses a "contact high," demonstrated by money manager Dana Giacchetto, who was convicted for defrauding his "less famous accounts�€"the A-minus or B-plus list�€"so as not to lose face with the A-plusers." Even more grisly is Orth's account of Andrew Cunahan, who shot Gianni Versace and then himself, hoping for worldwide attention and immortality. Orth dissects such diverse personalities as Margaret Thatcher, Woody Allen, Karl Lagerfeld and, poignantly, Dame Margot Fonteyn, who sadly reflects, "I have lived my life in what I call the empty hotel room." Orth combines merciless clarity with compassion in analyzing her power-hungry and tragic subjects.

Orth's first book, Vulgar Favors (1999), offered a perceptive look at serial killer Andrew Cunanan and the society that nurtured him. Her follow-up provides an equally perceptive look at celebrities and the society that nurtures them. Collecting a number of her Vanity Fair essays (with new bridging material), the book takes us inside the worlds of such notables as singer Tina Turner, author Arianna Huffington, Sein Fein president Gerry Adam, and, again, murderer Cunanan. The book's variety reinforces the idea that celebrity has many meanings, and Orth's work--in-depth, broad ranging, free of sensationalism--reminds us that the celebrity profile doesn't have to be a fawning puff piece. One of the essays here reconnects nicely to today's headlines: a 1994 profile of Michael Jackson discussing the child-molestation charge that was pending against him then. Ultimately, though, this book doesn't need to rely on current events to make its mark. I am the only person who did not like this book?

I was greatly disappointed by this book. I expected it to be a serious study of fame and what people do to get it. Instead, it was a series of old Vanity Fair articles strung together in a book. Some people were interesting but most many were boring people that no one really wants to read about.
I hate that I paid $17.50 for it and hope my bad review does not drive down the resale value as I try to get rid of it.

Don't Be Fooled -- This a Collection of Vanity Fair Articles

She's a great writer, but if you read Vanity Fair, YOU HAVE READ THIS ALL BEFORE! The publisher should be ASHAMED of how they marketed this book, suggesting it is a comprehensive original piece of writing about a very interesting subject -- when in fact, it is a collection of Orth's previously written pieces. What a rip off.
I'm returning my copy because the book is not what it suggests it is. (And some of the articles profile poeple we SERIOUSLY no longer care about, or about whom so much has already been written (Michael Jackson, Laci Peterson) that the articles seem seriously dated.
She's married to Tim Russert whose own book just hit the new york times best seller list, so they will not be hurting for money. Take a pass on this book. Maureen, use your considerable talent and write a book instead of publishing a collection of tired pieces that ran elsewhere. (Does anyone REALLY care about Tina Turner some 10 YEARS after her book and the subsequent movie was released???) Orth is a compelling writer and I love reading her work in Vanity Fair. I expected more.....

this book is simply a re-hash of old Vanity Fair articles. She gets paid for those articles then slaps them together in a book for a second payday. What a lazy way to "write" a book?

About the Author
International Self Improvement guru Lilou, a.k.a. 'Big L', believes that we can create anything we want using the power of our thoughts (as revealed in The Secret). Drawn to the USA from France, she used the Law of Attraction to co-found the '100-Day Reality Challenge' community, build a following of thousands of YouTubers (Youtube username: liloumace), and meet Oprah Winfrey, someone she greatly admires. Lilou's mission and vision is to help millions of people to live a joyful and fulfilled life. Lilou was born in Santa Barbara, California, in August 1977, of French parents. Truthful Guidance from a Friend

Unlike most people, I have had the pleasure of meeting Lilou in person, which is one of the reasons I bought the book. She is just as sincere in the pages of this tome as she is in real life. I live in Chicago and met her while she was hosting a show called, "Your Juicy Life". This book is perfect for any who is experiencing job loss or who maybe going through a mid-life crisis of sorts. It is so easy in this day and age to become cynical and negative about the future, but Lilou offers a refreshing enthusiastic perspective for approaching todays challenges. What appeals most to me is her ability to literally open herself up entirely. In this book, you get to live every moment of despair, hope, fear, joy, self-doubt, revelation, and triumph that she experiences on her journey. Even if you are someone who doesn't put to much stock in the Law of Attraction or the book, "The Secret", you will seriously consider changing your approach to life and its problems after reading this book. Lilou Mace is like a friend that not only empathises with your situation but who gets you all fired up and excited about your life and your dreams.
